Blizzard has officially announced Diablo V, confirming that the next mainline entry in its action RPG series is targeting a Spring 2029 release. Revealed during the BlizzCon 2026 Opening Ceremony, the sequel will begin from an unusually bleak premise: Sanctuary has already fallen, its heroes have been defeated, and Diablo has won. Blizzard says the game is currently in development, although an exact release date and launch platforms have not yet been announced.
The announcement marks a significant change from the usual setup of the series, where players have typically fought to prevent the forces of Hell from destroying or conquering Sanctuary. In Diablo V, that catastrophe has already happened before the player’s journey begins. Blizzard says the central question behind the game is what players will have to become to survive in a world that has already fallen, suggesting the state of Sanctuary will influence both the story and the choices available to players.
During the reveal, Diablo designer Joe Shely said players will enter a world where Diablo has already taken Sanctuary rather than trying to stop him from doing so. He also described a setting without the towns and safe places players would normally expect to provide protection. Production director Tiffany Wat said the premise changes how players survive, the powers they may be willing to claim and the sacrifices they could make, establishing a darker starting point for the sequel without yet detailing its gameplay systems.
The Spring 2029 target would put Diablo V roughly six years after Diablo IV’s 2023 launch. Blizzard’s plans for another mainline game had already been the subject of reports suggesting the company wanted a shorter gap between Diablo IV and Diablo V, but BlizzCon is the first time the company has formally announced the sequel and attached a release window to it. The confirmation also makes clear that Blizzard intends to move the main series forward while continuing to support Diablo IV.
For now, Blizzard has revealed considerably more about Diablo V’s premise than its actual mechanics. The company has not announced playable classes, detailed combat changes, progression systems or other major gameplay features. More information is expected during the “Diablo V: Forging the Next Era” BlizzCon panel, where the development team is scheduled to discuss the game’s story, world-building approach, class design philosophy and broader creative direction.
Diablo V was only one part of Blizzard’s wider Diablo presentation at BlizzCon 2026. The company also confirmed that it is developing an animated Diablo series with Netflix, announced the Amazon as an upcoming Diablo IV class for the first half of 2027, and revealed that Diablo IV is coming to Nintendo Switch 2. Those announcements show Blizzard continuing to expand the existing game and the wider franchise even with its next numbered entry now publicly scheduled.
The sequel’s premise is ultimately the most substantial detail Blizzard has disclosed so far. Instead of another struggle to prevent Sanctuary’s destruction, Diablo V starts after that struggle has already been lost, giving Blizzard a very different foundation for its world and story. With Spring 2029 still more than two years away, however, many of the details that will define how Diablo V actually plays remain to be revealed.
