Square Enix has released a free Final Fantasy Resonance demo for PlayStation 5, giving players access to the game’s entire first chapter ahead of its October 22, 2026 launch. The demo was announced during Sony’s September 3 State of Play alongside a new trailer that also confirmed Sephiroth will appear in the RPG. Progress made in the demo can be carried over into the full game.
The demo covers the opening chapter of Final Fantasy Resonance, including its story introduction and evolved turn-based combat system. Square Enix says the release is designed to let players experience the game’s world, battles and visual style before launch rather than offering a separate slice built specifically for the demo. The transferable save data means players who decide to purchase the full version will not need to replay the opening section.
Final Fantasy Resonance is built around the concept of imagining how the series might have developed if it had continued pushing pixel art rather than moving entirely toward 3D presentation. The game combines HD-2D environments with what Square Enix calls Cinematic Pixel Art, a technique that renders 3DCG scenes in a pixel-based visual style. Its story revolves around protecting Crystals scattered across the world while opposing Veritas of the Dark, who seeks their destruction.

Combat retains traditional turn-based commands but adds systems intended to make battles more tactical. A timeline at the top of the screen displays the upcoming action order for both allies and enemies, allowing players to plan around incoming attacks. Enemies also have a Stagger Gauge beneath their health bar, and depleting it prevents them from acting on their next turn while lowering their defense.
Another major system is Visions, which are crystallized essences connected to characters encountered throughout the story. Players can equip Visions and unlock abilities through battle, then continue using learned abilities even after switching to a different Vision as long as they remain within the available cost limit. Square Enix describes this as a more accessible evolution of Final Fantasy’s traditional job system, with different combinations creating potential ability synergies.
Legacy Final Fantasy characters are also incorporated through the Vision system. Players can visit Vision Crystal Sanctums across the world to obtain Visions based on heroes from earlier games and then equip their abilities. The latest trailer revealed that Sephiroth will appear as one of the characters players can encounter, although his role differs from a conventional party-member appearance.
Instead, players will be able to find and challenge Sephiroth in battle. Defeating him will unlock a special reward, although Square Enix has not yet disclosed exactly what that reward is. His inclusion gives Final Fantasy Resonance another direct connection to the wider series beyond its visual style, summons and familiar recurring elements.
Visions also connect to another combat mechanic called Resonances. After triggering a Sweeping Stagger, players can unleash a Vision-specific special move at the end of an Extra Phase. These Resonances can deal heavy damage, hit multiple enemies or provide additional effects depending on the Vision being used.
Summons return through the game’s Esper system. Players can unlock Espers by progressing through the story and completing side quests, after which the summoned creature will fight alongside the party for three turns. Each Esper finishes its appearance with a powerful attack before leaving the battle.
The new presentation formed part of the September 3 State of Play lineup, where Sony showcased several upcoming PS5 releases and updates. For Final Fantasy Resonance, however, the most immediate development is that players no longer need to wait until October to try the game’s combat and opening story.
Final Fantasy Resonance launches for PlayStation 5 on October 22, 2026. With the full first chapter now playable for free, save transfer confirmed and Sephiroth officially joining the game as a challenge encounter, Square Enix has provided its most substantial hands-on opportunity yet ahead of release.
