Fortnite Leak Details Sonic Rift Anomaly Coming September 17

Fortnite is reportedly getting a Sonic-themed Rift Anomaly on September 17, with a new datamine detailing timed ring races, three possible track layouts and high-tier rewards. Fortnite leaker HYPEX says the event will arrive with the v42.20 update and will challenge players to complete a Sonic race before a three-minute timer expires. Epic Games has not yet published the full Rift Anomaly details, so the reward probabilities and specific loot pool should be treated as datamined information until the update goes live.

The race appears to expand on Sonic’s existing role in Fortnite Chapter 7 Season 4: Override. Epic already confirmed at the start of the season that players would be able to race through Green Hill Zone using Sonic the Hedgehog’s Power Sneakers, while Sonic, Tails and Shadow were introduced as Sprites with separate gameplay abilities. The newly uncovered anomaly appears to turn that crossover into a more structured mid-match activity with randomized rewards for reaching the end.

According to HYPEX, the Sonic Race Rift Anomaly will select from three different track layouts placed around the Battle Royale island. Players will have three minutes to race through rings and complete the course, with a successful run granting three rewards: a power-up, a Sprite and a weapon. The structure makes the activity considerably more valuable than a purely cosmetic crossover sequence because finishing it can directly change a player’s loadout and mobility during the match.

The power-up reward reportedly has a 75% chance of granting a 1-Up Token and a 25% chance of producing a God Mode Llama. The God Mode Llama is one of Override’s strongest temporary effects, providing a short period of invulnerability along with enhanced movement and the ability to smash through structures. That makes the rarer outcome potentially significant, particularly if the race can be completed consistently during normal Battle Royale matches.

A successful race will also reportedly award one of three Sonic crossover Sprites with equal odds: Sonic, Tails or Shadow. Those companions already have distinct abilities in Override, with the Sonic Sprite increasing sprint speed, Tails providing hovering assistance and Shadow automatically reloading weapons over time even while they are unequipped. The Sprite itself can reportedly appear in three variants, with an 82% chance for a regular version and 9% chances for either Gold or Cheat Master.

Cheat Master variants have already become part of Override’s broader risk-and-reward systems, including limited events where rare Sprite and consumable drops receive boosts. The Sonic anomaly would therefore provide another route into that system rather than introducing an entirely separate progression mechanic. That also fits the season’s wider focus on temporary rule changes, hidden bonuses and server-wide gameplay modifiers.

The weapon reward may be the most important part of the race for players looking for an immediate combat advantage. HYPEX says completing the anomaly grants either a Legendary or Exotic weapon, with the Exotic pool including the Overclocked 8-Bit Shotgun, Overpowered Pump Shotgun, Rebecca’s Guns, Accelerant Drum Gun and Balloon Popper Assault Rifle. Several of those weapons were recently uncovered through Fortnite v42.20 Exotic weapon datamines, suggesting the Sonic activity may become one of the ways Epic distributes the new loot.

Rebecca’s Guns are especially notable because they belong to the Cyberpunk: Edgerunners crossover arriving around the same update. Earlier leaks detailed Rebecca’s Exotic weapon mechanics, while Epic has since confirmed the broader Edgerunners collaboration for Override. Including those guns in the Sonic race reward pool would connect multiple gaming crossovers through the season’s shared loot systems.

The update will also reportedly add a free Sonic loading screen called “Take it to the End Zone.” HYPEX says players will unlock it after completing five “Gotta Go Fast!” quests, although the individual quest objectives have not yet been detailed publicly. That gives the Sonic content a permanent cosmetic reward alongside the temporary Battle Royale activity.

Sonic has already become one of Override’s more unusual collaborations, with Sega specifically creating an android version of the character for Fortnite so that Sonic can use firearms without changing the original character’s rules. The upcoming Rift Anomaly now appears set to expand that crossover further through a dedicated race built directly into Battle Royale.

Fortnite v42.20 downtime is officially scheduled to begin September 17 at 4 AM ET. Epic has not yet confirmed the leaked Sonic race probabilities or full Exotic reward pool, but the underlying update and Sonic’s existing gameplay integration are official. The final implementation should become clear once v42.20 goes live.
