Fortnite v42.20 Leak Reveals Four New Exotic Weapons

Fortnite’s v42.20 files reportedly contain four new Exotic weapons based on familiar guns from the current loot pool. Dataminer FireMonkey says the update includes an Exotic Pump Shotgun, Exotic Assault Rifle, Exotic 8-Bit Shotgun and Exotic Drum Gun. Epic Games has not yet publicly detailed the four weapons, so their presence and any unreleased properties should currently be treated as datamined information.

The discovery comes from the same v42.20 build that began exposing unreleased content before the update’s wider release. An early Fortnite v42.20 Xbox build reportedly became accessible ahead of schedule, allowing dataminers to inspect upcoming cosmetics and gameplay content. That has made this update unusually visible before Epic publishes its complete Battle Royale notes.

All four weapons are Exotic variants of existing or recently introduced weapon families rather than completely new base guns. Epic added the 8-Bit Shotgun as a Common-to-Legendary weapon with Chapter 7 Season 4: Override, while the season’s underlying content also includes new versions of the Pump Shotgun and Drum Gun. The Assault Rifle is one of Fortnite’s longest-running weapon archetypes, making the Exotic version the most conventional-sounding addition of the four.

What makes the leak potentially more significant is Fortnite’s use of Exotic rarity. Exotic weapons generally differ from standard Legendary or Mythic variants by adding a special property, unusual firing behavior or secondary gameplay effect rather than simply increasing damage. FireMonkey’s initial post identifies the four weapon types but does not provide enough verified information to establish what unique ability each one will have.

That distinction is particularly important for the 8-Bit Shotgun, which has already become one of Override’s more recognizable new weapons. A higher-rarity variant could meaningfully change how the gun is used if Epic attaches an Exotic mechanic to it, but no such effect should be assumed until the relevant descriptions or gameplay become available. The same applies to the Pump Shotgun, Assault Rifle and Drum Gun.

The weapons also fit the broader structure of Chapter 7 Season 4, where Epic has placed more emphasis on modifying loot through the Loot Hacks system. Players spend Sprite Dust to influence chest drops and gain access to items that would not ordinarily appear through standard looting. The previous v42.10 Loot Hacks refresh added another pool of weapons while reducing the rarity range of hacked loot after Epic said high-powered items were appearing too frequently.

It is not yet clear whether all four newly datamined Exotics will enter the normal Battle Royale loot pool, appear through Loot Hacks, be tied to NPCs or events, or use another acquisition method. Fortnite has historically distributed Exotic weapons through several systems, including characters, special containers and limited gameplay features. The v42.20 files establish the weapon variants themselves, but their final availability still depends on how Epic activates them.

The discovery comes alongside a wider collection of v42.20 material uncovered before launch. Dataminers have also found new cosmetics and event-related content, including Fortnite’s ninth-birthday rewards in the update files. Epic has separately acknowledged v42.20 through its developer documentation, although its pre-release notes focus primarily on Creative and UEFN changes and known issues rather than these Battle Royale Exotics.

Players therefore should not assume that every weapon discovered in the files will become obtainable immediately when v42.20 goes live. Fortnite frequently contains assets and weapon configurations that can be enabled later through hotfixes or scheduled content releases. Epic can also adjust stats and functionality between a datamined build and the point at which an item becomes active.

For now, the strongest confirmed detail from the datamine is the lineup itself: Exotic versions of the Pump Shotgun, Assault Rifle, 8-Bit Shotgun and Drum Gun are present in Fortnite v42.20. Their unique effects, exact stats and acquisition methods remain unconfirmed, leaving the next Battle Royale rollout or Epic’s official update notes to clarify how the four weapons will actually work.
