GameStop has raised the listed price of a pre-owned PlayStation 5 Pro to $1,399.99 in the United States, putting a used console $500 above Sony’s current recommended retail price for a new system. The retailer’s own product page now shows the $1,399.99 price for pre-owned and refurbished units, while GameStop Pro members are shown a discounted price of $1,329.99. New units remain listed at $899.99, although availability is currently limited.

The change first surfaced through an internal GameStop notice shared online, which instructed stores to update PS5 Pro pre-owned pricing and explicitly stated that used consoles being more expensive than new ones was intentional. The notice listed the standard digital PS5 Pro at $1,399.99 and versions bundled with a disc drive at $1,499.99. Trade-in values were also raised, with the digital model reportedly valued at $800 and physical configurations at $850.

GameStop’s live listing provides direct confirmation that the $1,399.99 figure is not simply a mistaken number circulating on social media. At the time of writing, the retailer lists the pre-owned PS5 Pro at that price but says the console is unavailable for online purchase, while availability can vary by store. The $1,329.99 GameStop Pro price reflects the retailer’s usual 5% discount on eligible pre-owned products rather than a separate standard price.

The increase comes during an unusually difficult period for PS5 Pro availability. New systems have disappeared from stock at several major US retailers in recent weeks, while third-party sellers have been asking significantly more than official retail pricing. Sony itself increased the US recommended retail price of the PS5 Pro to $899.99 in April 2026, citing continued pressure in the global economic environment.

Broader memory and storage supply constraints have also been affecting the consumer hardware market, with DRAM and NAND availability remaining tight as demand from AI infrastructure continues to absorb manufacturing capacity. Those conditions have been cited as one possible contributor to constrained console supply, although GameStop has not publicly attributed its specific pre-owned price increase to memory shortages. Demand has also risen ahead of major game releases, further complicating efforts to separate component constraints from unusually strong consumer demand.

The scale of GameStop’s increase is notable because used hardware normally offers buyers a cheaper route into a console generation. Instead, the retailer is currently asking roughly 56% more for a standard pre-owned PS5 Pro than Sony’s $899.99 recommended new price. It is also double the PS5 Pro’s original $699.99 US launch price from November 2024.

The situation highlights how quickly limited availability can distort the market for high-demand gaming hardware. A retailer listing does not necessarily mean buyers are completing purchases at $1,399.99, particularly while the product remains unavailable online, but it establishes an unusually high official asking price from one of the largest US gaming retailers. It also places GameStop’s used inventory much closer to the prices normally associated with third-party resellers during shortages.

For buyers, the key distinction is that Sony has not announced a new $1,399 PS5 Pro retail price. The official US recommended price remains $899.99, and GameStop’s increase applies specifically to its pre-owned inventory. Whether those used prices remain elevated will likely depend on how quickly new PS5 Pro stock improves and whether current demand continues through the remainder of 2026.
