Gears of War: E-Day has officially launched worldwide on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC and Steam, with the game also available through Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass. The Coalition’s new entry takes the series back 14 years before the original Gears of War, following Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago during the opening days of the Locust invasion. The worldwide release went live on October 6 after Premium Edition players received five days of early access beginning October 1.
E-Day is positioned as an origin story rather than a remake or direct continuation of Gears 5. The campaign begins as the Locust Horde erupts from underground and turns the city of Kalona into a war zone, with Marcus, Dom and the rest of their squad trying to survive the first three days of Emergence Day. The Coalition has emphasized a darker action-horror tone, presenting the Locust as a more frightening threat than the experienced soldiers encountered later in the series.
The campaign remains built around the franchise’s cover-based third-person combat, but E-Day also introduces modernized movement and traversal. Players can jump, vault and slide while moving between cover, and familiar weapons such as the Gnasher and Longshot return alongside reworked and new weapons. The Chainsaw Lancer is also available, while close-range melee combat plays a larger role during some encounters.

Exploration is more flexible than the largely linear structure might initially suggest. Xbox says sections of Kalona contain larger open areas with multiple routes toward objectives, along with optional side missions involving civilians and other squads. Completing those objectives can reward weapon modifications, while collectible items scattered through the environments provide additional background on characters and the wider state of Sera during the invasion.
E-Day includes two-player split-screen for the campaign on console as well as online co-op. The broader multiplayer package extends beyond the story with Horde Siege, a new take on the franchise’s wave-based PvE mode that supports four-player squads. Players can choose between classes such as Assault, Marksman, Medic and Breacher before taking on larger maps, shared objectives and world bosses.
Versus multiplayer also returns with new maps and a mix of refined 4v4 modes. Ranked playlists are aimed at more competitive players, while Social playlists provide a less structured alternative. The game supports cross-platform multiplayer, and optional Xbox account linking enables roaming saves, cross-platform invites and progression features across supported platforms.
The launch follows several weeks of final preparation from The Coalition. The studio confirmed in September that the game had gone gold alongside its final PC specifications, while pre-installing began on September 29. E-Day was also included in Xbox Game Pass September Wave 2, with day-one access scheduled for October 6.
On Xbox Series X|S, Microsoft lists support for 4K Ultra HD, HDR and up to 60fps depending on the hardware and display configuration. The PC version adds support for features including Nvidia DLSS 4.5, AMD FSR Redstone, hardware ray tracing, Frame Generation and Multi Frame Generation on compatible GPUs. A built-in benchmark is also available, while the game has been optimized for supported handheld hardware including Steam Deck, Xbox Ally and Xbox Ally X.
Gears of War: E-Day is built from the ground up in Unreal Engine 5 and represents The Coalition’s first full new Gears release since Gears 5 in 2019. Rather than moving the timeline forward, the studio has used the prequel setting to revisit the earliest stage of Marcus and Dom’s partnership and the moment the Locust War began. The game is available now worldwide on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC and Steam, with cloud access also offered through supported Game Pass services.
