Grand Theft Auto VI is expected to be the biggest driver of console game spending growth in 2026, according to new market forecasts from Newzoo. The analytics firm projects console gaming revenue will reach $46.9 billion this year, up 5.1% year over year, with GTA VI’s November launch forming a critical part of that outlook. Full-game spending on console is forecast to rise 17.5%, which Newzoo describes as the strongest growth rate among the platform’s business models.
The figures come from Newzoo’s 2026 global games market outlook, which forecasts the overall games industry will generate $213.9 billion this year, an increase of 6.1%. Mobile remains the largest segment at $121.1 billion, while PC is expected to reach $45.9 billion and console slightly surpasses it at $46.9 billion. Newzoo specifically identifies GTA VI as one of the major forces supporting the console segment alongside subscriptions and higher game and service prices.
That does not mean GTA VI is literally responsible for all console revenue growth, as some descriptions of the forecast have suggested. Newzoo’s model includes several contributing factors, but the firm describes Rockstar’s November release as a critical assumption behind its console projection. It has also warned that without GTA VI, or if the game were delayed again, console revenue would be more likely to underperform year over year.

The importance placed on GTA VI reflects how heavily console revenue still depends on major premium releases. Newzoo’s broader PC and console analysis found that premium games represented roughly half of console revenue in 2025, with titles priced above $50 accounting for nearly 80% of premium revenue. A release with the scale and commercial expectations of GTA VI therefore has the potential to materially shift annual spending even though it arrives late in the year.
Rockstar has already demonstrated that demand extends well beyond ordinary pre-launch interest. GTA VI generated approximately $180 million in digital pre-orders across the United States and five major European markets during its first week of sales, according to earlier Newzoo data. The firm described that as the strongest opening pre-order campaign in its dataset and projected global cumulative sales of between $3.3 billion and $5.2 billion by the end of launch week, depending on how its sales curve develops.
There are also signs that anticipation is influencing hardware spending before release. UK data following Rockstar’s recent extended gameplay presentation showed PS5 sales rising 33% and Xbox Series X|S sales climbing 34% week over week. Those figures cover a relatively short period and cannot establish that GTA VI alone caused every purchase, but they support expectations that the game could encourage some players to upgrade or buy current-generation hardware.
At the same time, Newzoo has cautioned against assuming GTA VI will produce an unprecedented hardware boom. The firm’s analysts have argued that console install-base growth may be more moderate than some expectations suggest, particularly because players already own large numbers of compatible PS5 and Xbox Series systems. The more significant effect could instead appear in software spending, where a premium-priced blockbuster can directly influence annual revenue totals.
Grand Theft Auto VI launches November 19, 2026 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Rockstar is selling the Standard Edition for $79.99, with pre-orders having opened on June 25, giving the publisher nearly five months of advance sales before launch. A PC version has not currently been announced.
Newzoo’s forecast ultimately presents GTA VI as a major catalyst rather than the sole reason the console business is growing. Subscriptions, pricing changes and other releases remain part of the equation, but few individual games are large enough to materially affect an entire platform’s annual revenue forecast. With full-game spending expected to grow 17.5% and total console revenue forecast at $46.9 billion, GTA VI’s November launch is positioned as one of the most commercially important events in the 2026 games market.
