PS5 and Xbox Sales Jump Over 30% After GTA VI Extended Look

PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S sales jumped by roughly a third in the UK in the week following Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto VI Extended Look. NielsenIQ data reported by The Game Business shows PS5 sales increased 33% week-over-week, while combined Xbox Series X|S sales rose 34%. The surge came immediately after Rockstar premiered its nearly 27-minute GTA VI presentation on August 27.

The GTA VI Extended Look provided the most extensive official look at the game so far, with Rockstar confirming that the footage was captured entirely in-game on PlayStation 5. The presentation focused on Jason and Lucia, Vice City and the wider state of Leonida while showing driving, combat, activities and other parts of the open world. Its timing gives the hardware increase a particularly notable correlation with renewed attention around GTA VI.

PS5 sales rose 33% compared with the previous week, according to NielsenIQ, despite Sony’s current-generation hardware having faced a difficult year in the UK. The Game Business reports that PS5 sales were down 32% year-over-year through the end of July 2026. Overall UK console hardware sales were down 14.4% over the same period, making the post-GTA VI increase a significant reversal from the broader trend.

Xbox saw an even slightly larger weekly increase, with Series X|S sales climbing 34%. Unlike PS5, Xbox Series X|S sales had been up 3.1% year-over-year through July, although Microsoft’s current-generation consoles have also faced the same wider pressures affecting hardware demand. Those include rising prices and an increasingly mature console generation in which many potential buyers already own current hardware.

Nintendo Switch 2 sales also rose by around a third during the same week, although its increase cannot be attributed as cleanly to GTA VI. The system is not an announced platform for Rockstar’s game, and The Game Business notes that an impending Switch 2 price increase may have encouraged consumers to buy before the higher price took effect. GTA VI is currently confirmed only for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.

The sales increase follows enormous interest in Rockstar’s August showcase across other metrics. The Extended Look reached 31.1 million Netflix views in its first four days, while reaction streams pushed the event to 3.97 million peak livestream viewers. Sensor Tower data also indicated that the presentation significantly increased Netflix activity during its premiere window.

That attention appears to be arriving at a useful moment for Sony and Microsoft. Newzoo analyst Ronan Patrick told The Game Business that GTA VI and Call of Duty should help increase the console install base, although he cautioned against expecting an enormous long-term hardware shift. Higher hardware prices remain a barrier, particularly compared with prices earlier in the generation.

The latest figures do not prove that every additional PS5 or Xbox sold during the week was purchased specifically for GTA VI. Other promotions, stock conditions and normal weekly fluctuations can influence hardware sales. However, the timing immediately after one of the year’s largest gaming presentations, combined with comparable increases across both platforms receiving GTA VI, provides a measurable indication of the demand Rockstar’s game could generate ahead of release.

The UK market has seen similarly sharp hardware movements around major retail periods before. During Black Friday 2025, PS5 accounted for 62% of UK console sales for the week, demonstrating how promotions and major events can rapidly change hardware demand. The GTA VI increase is notable because it occurred months before launch rather than during a traditional holiday sales period.

Grand Theft Auto VI launches November 19, 2026 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. With more than two months remaining before release, the NielsenIQ figures provide an early indication that some consumers may already be upgrading or entering the current console generation ahead of Rockstar’s biggest launch in years.
