GTA VI Single-Player Won’t Have Microtransactions or Generative AI

Grand Theft Auto VI’s single-player experience will not let players spend real-world money on in-game items, and Rockstar says generative AI was not used in the game’s development.

The confirmation comes from Kinda Funny Games hosts Andy Cortez and Greg Miller, who recently visited Rockstar North in Edinburgh and spoke directly with co-studio head and head of development Rob Nelson.

Cortez said he asked Nelson whether players would be able to use real money to buy things inside GTA VI. According to Cortez, the answer was a direct no, which he summarized as there being no monetization of that kind.

Miller separately asked whether generative AI had been used in the creation of GTA VI and received another direct negative response.

The comments establish a clearer boundary around two subjects that have generated considerable speculation ahead of GTA VI’s November launch.

On monetization, the clarification concerns GTA VI’s current single-player experience rather than whatever Rockstar eventually does with the next iteration of GTA Online.

Kinda Funny also asked Rockstar about the future of GTA Online, but the studio declined to discuss its plans.

That distinction matters because GTA V’s single-player campaign and GTA Online have operated under very different business models.

GTA Online has relied heavily on optional purchases of in-game currency through Shark Cards and later GTA+ subscriptions, while GTA V’s story mode does not contain an equivalent recurring real-money economy.

Rockstar’s comments indicate GTA VI’s campaign will follow the latter approach rather than introducing real-money purchases for items, vehicles or currency directly into its single-player world.

They do not, however, establish how Rockstar intends to monetize GTA VI’s eventual online component.

The generative AI answer is broader and relates to how GTA VI has been made.

Rockstar has emphasized the amount of handcrafted work behind the game during its latest round of previews and interviews. That includes the enormous quantity of animation, environmental detail, NPC behavior and individually authored content being used to build Leonida.

The New York Times also reported this week that Rockstar emphasized GTA VI’s human-made craftsmanship while discussing the scale of the project.

Generative AI has become an increasingly contentious subject across the games industry, particularly around writing, art, voice work and asset generation. Several major publishers have experimented with AI-assisted development tools, while developers and performers have raised concerns about how those technologies might affect creative work.

Rockstar’s answer indicates GTA VI was not built using generative AI for its content production.

That does not necessarily mean Rockstar uses no machine-learning or conventional AI technologies internally. Games have used non-generative AI techniques for decades for systems such as NPC behavior, navigation and simulation.

The statement specifically concerns the generative AI technology that has become widely associated with producing text, imagery, audio and other creative content.

GTA VI’s latest Extended Look has given players their clearest view yet of the scale of Rockstar’s handcrafted approach.

The presentation showed dense crowds, extensive interiors, dynamic police behavior, expanded vehicle theft mechanics, character progression and a large number of interactions spread across Vice City and the wider state of Leonida.

Rockstar has also been highlighting the work of its writers, artists, designers and animators during interviews surrounding the reveal.

Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled to launch on November 19, 2026 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.

For the campaign, Rockstar’s position is now considerably clearer: players will not be asked to spend real money on in-game purchases, and the studio says generative AI was not used to create GTA VI.

What happens with the next version of GTA Online remains a separate question that Rockstar is not yet ready to answer.
