Nintendo has announced Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity – Definitive Edition for Nintendo Switch 2, with the upgraded release launching February 25, 2027. Revealed during the September 9 Nintendo Direct, the new version targets 60 frames per second, features higher-resolution visuals and increases the number of enemies that can appear on screen during battles. It also bundles the original game’s Expansion Pass content and adds a new Calamity Mode difficulty.
The performance improvements address one of the most obvious limitations of the original Nintendo Switch release. Age of Calamity regularly fills its battlefields with large groups of enemies, and the Switch version could struggle to maintain a consistent frame rate when combat became particularly busy. Definitive Edition uses the additional power of Switch 2 to increase both visual quality and battlefield density while targeting 60 FPS.
Nintendo is also increasing the scale of encounters by allowing more enemies to appear simultaneously. That fits the game’s Warriors-style structure, which revolves around cutting through large groups of monsters while completing objectives across expansive battlefields. The increased enemy count is therefore more than a cosmetic upgrade, since crowd density directly affects the feel and pace of combat.

All content released through the Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity Expansion Pass is included in the Definitive Edition. The original Expansion Pass added new playable characters, weapons, challenges, enemies and story content across multiple waves after the game’s 2020 launch. Switch 2 players buying the new edition will receive that material as part of the package rather than needing to purchase the Expansion Pass separately.
A new Calamity Mode will provide an additional challenge beyond the existing difficulty settings. Nintendo describes it as an ultra-tough option built for players looking for the game’s hardest battles, although the company has not yet detailed specific changes to enemy health, damage, AI or encounter design. It is currently the most significant piece of newly announced gameplay content exclusive to the Definitive Edition.
Players who already own Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity on Nintendo Switch will be able to transfer their save data to the Switch 2 release. Nintendo is also offering existing owners a discount when purchasing the digital Definitive Edition through the Nintendo eShop. Unlike Pikmin 4’s Switch 2 upgrade path, however, Nintendo is presenting Age of Calamity – Definitive Edition as a separate release rather than a conventional Switch 2 Edition upgrade pack.
Age of Calamity originally launched in November 2020 and is set around the Great Calamity, approximately 100 years before the events of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Players control characters including Link, Zelda, Impa and the four Champions while fighting enormous groups of Bokoblins, Guardians and other enemies. The game combines locations and characters from Breath of the Wild with the large-scale combat associated with Koei Tecmo’s Warriors series.
Its story also expands on characters and events that were largely presented through memories and historical references in Breath of the Wild. Rather than simply retelling those events exactly as previously described, Age of Calamity develops its own narrative around the conflict with Calamity Ganon. The result gives the game a distinct place within Nintendo’s modern Zelda lineup even though its combat structure differs substantially from the main series.
The Switch 2 version arrives as Nintendo continues revisiting major first-party Switch releases with enhanced editions and additional content. Age of Calamity is particularly suited to that treatment because improved performance can materially affect battles where dozens of enemies, visual effects and playable characters are active at once.
Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity – Definitive Edition launches exclusively for Nintendo Switch 2 on February 25, 2027. It will include all Expansion Pass content, enhanced resolution and frame rate, 60 FPS support, larger enemy groups, save-data transfer and the new Calamity Mode difficulty.
