Lauri “Cyanide” Happonen, the Finnish professional League of Legends player who won the game’s inaugural World Championship with Fnatic in 2011, has died at the age of 31. His death occurred on July 31, 2026, but was publicly reported on October 26.

Finnish newspaper Ilta-Sanomat confirmed the news through Finland’s Digital and Population Data Services Agency (DVV). The circumstances surrounding Happonen’s death have not been publicly disclosed.

Cyanide was one of the earliest prominent figures in competitive League of Legends. Playing as Fnatic’s jungler, he helped the European organization win the first League of Legends World Championship in 2011, when he was just 16 years old.

His career continued through the formative years of European League of Legends esports. Alongside players including Enrique “xPeke” Cedeño Martínez, Paul “sOAZ” Boyer and Bora “YellOwStaR” Kim, Cyanide became a central part of Fnatic’s successful European roster.

Between 2013 and 2014, Fnatic secured three consecutive European League Championship Series titles. The team also reached the semifinals of the 2013 World Championship, establishing itself among the leading international competitors of that period.

Cyanide later stepped away from regular top-level competition, although he remained a recognizable figure within the League of Legends community.

On July 25, 2026, just six days before his reported death, Happonen participated in an EU LCS Classic Showmatch during Karmine Corp’s Roadtrip event in France. The exhibition reunited several prominent players from the early years of European League of Legends competition.

Following the public announcement of his death, former teammates and members of the esports community shared tributes remembering both his competitive achievements and his personality.

Former Fnatic teammate YellOwStaR posted an emotional message reflecting on their time together and their reunion at the July exhibition match.

“Lauri was so much more than a teammate,” YellOwStaR wrote, describing Happonen as one of the kindest and most genuine people he had known.

YellOwStaR also recalled that Cyanide had spoken about his future plans when they last met, making the news particularly difficult for those who had remained close to him.

Fnatic head coach Fabian “GrabbZ” Lohmann acknowledged Cyanide’s influence on the development of competitive League of Legends, noting that players from his generation helped shape the esports scene and inspired many early viewers.

Other community figures, including Spanish League of Legends personality Antonio “Th3Antonio” Espinosa, also expressed their condolences.

Happonen’s death follows the loss of another member of Fnatic’s original World Championship-winning roster. Maciej “Shushei” Ratuszniak, who played alongside Cyanide during the team’s historic 2011 victory, died in April 2025 at the age of 36 following a battle with cancer.

Cyanide’s legacy is closely associated with the emergence of professional League of Legends in Europe. His 2011 World Championship victory and subsequent domestic titles placed him among the players who helped establish Fnatic as one of the region’s most successful early esports organizations.

The October 26 announcement has prompted an outpouring of condolences from former teammates, esports personalities and longtime League of Legends fans.
