Nintendo has confirmed that the upcoming live-action The Legend of Zelda movie will tell an original story rather than directly adapting a single game in the series. The clarification came during the September 8 Legend of Zelda 40th Anniversary Direct, where Nintendo also revealed that the film will simply be titled The Legend of Zelda. The movie remains scheduled for a worldwide theatrical release on April 30, 2027.

According to information presented during the anniversary broadcast, the film’s story draws inspiration from the stories, ideas and concepts established across The Legend of Zelda’s 40-year history. That means it will not function as a straightforward film version of games such as Ocarina of Time, Breath of the Wild or Tears of the Kingdom. Nintendo has not yet provided a detailed plot synopsis, so exactly how much material it borrows from individual eras of the franchise remains unclear.

The title itself was also addressed during the presentation. The live-action film currently carries no subtitle and is simply called The Legend of Zelda, with Nintendo indicating that audiences will understand the reason for that decision once they see the movie. No further explanation was given, leaving the significance of the title tied to story details Nintendo is still keeping under wraps.

The new information resolves one of the largest unanswered questions surrounding the adaptation. Since Nintendo first announced the film in November 2023, fans have debated whether director Wes Ball would adapt an established entry or create a new version of Hyrule for the screen. The original-story approach gives the production room to use familiar characters, locations and mythology without being required to reproduce the events of one particular game.

That flexibility fits the structure of the Zelda series itself. Different games regularly introduce new incarnations of Link and Princess Zelda, alternate versions of Hyrule and different interpretations of recurring characters such as Ganondorf. Nintendo’s official Zelda timeline also spans multiple eras and branching histories, meaning a new cinematic continuity can draw from recognizable elements without needing to slot directly into an existing game’s narrative.

The film update formed part of Nintendo’s Zelda 40th Anniversary Direct, which was announced as a roughly 30-minute presentation dedicated to the franchise’s anniversary. Movie information was one of several non-game initiatives included in the showcase, alongside updates connected to Nintendo’s wider celebration of the series.

Wes Ball, whose directing credits include the Maze Runner trilogy and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, is directing the adaptation. Nintendo representative director Shigeru Miyamoto and Avi Arad are producing, with Nintendo heavily involved in the production and financing more than half of the project. Sony Pictures Entertainment is handling worldwide theatrical distribution.

Nintendo has officially cast Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as Link and Bo Bragason as Princess Zelda. The company previously released production images showing the two characters in costume, offering the first official look at the live-action interpretations without revealing substantial story context. The designs include familiar Zelda elements while avoiding a direct recreation of any single game’s versions of the characters.

Production on the film has already progressed well beyond its initial development stage. Filming took place in New Zealand and has wrapped, putting the project into post-production ahead of its 2027 theatrical release. Nintendo has not yet released a full public trailer or detailed breakdown of the film’s major story beats, locations or supporting cast through its primary promotional channels.

The confirmation of an original story also means visual similarities to particular games should not be treated as evidence of a direct adaptation. Zelda’s blue clothing and the natural landscapes seen in earlier production material prompted comparisons with Breath of the Wild, while Link’s design contains elements associated with several versions of the character. Nintendo’s latest clarification makes clear that those influences can coexist within a new story built specifically for the film.

More details about The Legend of Zelda are expected to be revealed closer to release. For now, Nintendo has established the central creative direction: the movie will use the broader mythology and ideas of the Zelda series to tell its own story, rather than recreating one existing adventure for live action.
