Sony and LEGO have officially revealed a brick-built recreation of the original PlayStation console, confirming a collaboration that had repeatedly leaked ahead of its announcement. The 1,911-piece set recreates Sony’s first home console alongside its original-style controller and includes hidden references to Gran Turismo and Ape Escape. The LEGO PlayStation launches on October 1, 2026, priced at $159.99 in the United States.

The set was formally unveiled during Sony’s September 3 State of Play, confirming many of the details that had circulated through LEGO-focused leak accounts over the past several weeks. Images of the box had even appeared online shortly before the presentation after the product was reportedly found on a store shelf. With Sony and LEGO now announcing it publicly, the console model, release timing and included game references are no longer based solely on those leaks.

Rather than simply reproducing the gray exterior of the original PlayStation, LEGO has built several interactive elements into the model. The console includes an opening disc lid and recreations of its familiar front buttons, vents, controller ports and memory-card area. A separate brick-built controller is based on Sony’s original PlayStation pad from before the introduction of the Dual Analog and DualShock controllers.

The more unusual details are hidden inside the console itself. Sections of the LEGO PlayStation can be opened to reveal miniature displays based on Gran Turismo and Ape Escape, connecting the hardware model to two franchises closely associated with Sony’s first console generation. The Gran Turismo section recreates a small racing scene, while the Ape Escape display uses a colorful environment inspired by the platformer.

Gran Turismo is an especially appropriate inclusion given its importance to the original PlayStation. Polyphony Digital’s racing series became one of Sony’s defining first-party properties and the original Gran Turismo went on to become the best-selling game released for the console. Ape Escape also occupies an important place in PlayStation history because its 1999 debut was designed around Sony’s then-new DualShock controller and required analog-stick input.

That creates an amusing historical contrast with the controller included in the LEGO set. The brick-built pad recreates the earlier PlayStation controller without analog sticks, even though one of the hidden displays celebrates a game specifically designed around dual-stick controls. LEGO appears to be prioritizing the look of the console’s original launch-era hardware rather than matching every game represented inside it to the exact controller generation.

The model arrives as both LEGO and console manufacturers increasingly turn classic hardware into collector-focused display products. LEGO has previously produced detailed recreations of systems including Nintendo’s NES and Game Boy, while Atari has also received a brick-built console set. The PlayStation release extends that approach to Sony’s hardware history for the first time at this scale.

Sony’s original PlayStation debuted in Japan in December 1994 before reaching North America and Europe the following year. The system established PlayStation as a major console brand and introduced franchises that continue to form part of Sony’s gaming identity decades later. LEGO’s decision to focus on that original gray hardware makes the set more of a retro display model than a recreation of any current PlayStation product.

The reveal was one of several announcements made during the September 3 State of Play broadcasts, which Sony had scheduled back-to-back with a separate Japan-focused presentation. Unlike most of the event’s game announcements, however, the LEGO PlayStation is a physical collector product rather than new software or downloadable content.

The official announcement also closes out a relatively short but increasingly detailed sequence of leaks. Reports had already identified the 72306 set number, 1,911-piece count, October release and hidden Gran Turismo and Ape Escape references before Sony’s presentation. Those details can now be evaluated against the finished product rather than treated as unconfirmed information.

LEGO PlayStation launches October 1, 2026, with the brick-built original console, detachable controller and internal game-themed displays included in the set. For longtime PlayStation players, the model is less about reproducing a functioning console and more about compressing part of Sony’s early hardware and software history into a single display piece.
