Amazon MGM Studios’ Mass Effect TV series reportedly remains in development despite Electronic Arts shutting down BioWare and canceling the next game in the science-fiction RPG franchise. The adaptation is still moving forward at Prime Video, with its existing creative team reportedly remaining attached to the project.
IGN reports that sources within Prime Video confirmed the television adaptation has not been canceled following BioWare’s closure on October 21, 2026. One source indicated that all creatives previously involved in the production remain on board, suggesting the studio shutdown has not directly disrupted the television project.
The development comes just days after EA announced it was closing BioWare and canceling the next Mass Effect game as part of a broader restructuring. The decision ended development of the long-awaited follow-up to the original trilogy and Mass Effect: Andromeda, leaving the franchise’s future in gaming uncertain.

Unlike the canceled video game, the television adaptation is being developed separately through Amazon MGM Studios. Its continued development indicates that BioWare’s closure does not automatically mean the cancellation of other Mass Effect projects.
The Mass Effect adaptation has officially been in development at Amazon since November 2024, following earlier reports of negotiations dating back to 2021.
Doug Jung, whose credits include Star Trek Beyond and Mindhunter, was attached as showrunner as of August 2025. Daniel Casey, known for F9: The Fast Saga, was working on the scripts. The production team also included executive producers Karim Zreik and Ari Arad, alongside BioWare’s Mass Effect executive producer Mike Gamble.
IGN’s latest reporting indicates that the creative team remains attached, although Gamble’s precise involvement following BioWare’s closure has not been clarified.
The series is expected to tell an original story set within the established Mass Effect universe rather than directly adapting Commander Shepard’s adventures.
During BioWare’s N7 Day celebrations in November 2025, Gamble explained that the adaptation would take place after the events of the original game trilogy. The decision was intended to preserve the personal nature of Shepard’s story, which changes depending on players’ decisions throughout the games.
This approach would allow the television series to explore the franchise’s established science-fiction setting without establishing one particular version of Shepard’s choices as the definitive storyline.
However, the fate of the planned connection between the television adaptation and the next Mass Effect game remains unclear following the game’s cancellation.
The adaptation has also faced questions about its creative direction. Earlier in 2026, reports suggested that Amazon wanted scripts revised to make the series more accessible to audiences unfamiliar with the games. Casey subsequently disputed those claims.
Despite the latest indication that development is continuing, Amazon MGM Studios has not publicly announced a premiere date, filming schedule or cast.
Previous reporting suggested that production could begin during the fourth quarter of 2026, but there has been no confirmation that this timetable remains in place.
For now, the television adaptation remains a separate active Mass Effect project following BioWare’s closure. Its continued development is supported by IGN’s reporting from Prime Video sources, rather than a new public announcement from Amazon.
