The original Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has received a new R18+ classification in Australia, raising questions about whether Activision is preparing another release of the 2009 shooter. The official Australian Classification database confirms that the game was classified on October 1, 2026, although no new platforms or release plans have been announced.
The listing specifically identifies Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (2009), distinguishing it from the 2022 reboot of the same name. It carries a classification of R18+ with consumer advice covering high-impact drug use, in-game purchases, online interactivity and chat.
The record identifies Activision Publishing Inc. as the production company and lists the International Age Rating Coalition (IARC) as the applicant. Its version designation is “ORIGINAL,” while the year of production is recorded as 2026.

However, the classification does not identify a developer, publisher or specific platform. Its media type is also unspecified, meaning the listing alone cannot establish whether Activision intends to release a new port, restore availability on existing platforms or make another distribution-related change.
The distinction matters because an age classification is not the same as an official product announcement. Although the entry confirms that Modern Warfare 2 has received a new Australian rating, it provides no release date, supported hardware information or technical details.
The game originally launched in November 2009 for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC. Developed by Infinity Ward, it continued the original Modern Warfare storyline with Task Force 141 and the conflict involving Russian ultranationalist Vladimir Makarov.
Activision subsequently released Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Campaign Remastered in 2020 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. That edition featured updated visuals but did not include the original game’s multiplayer component.
The new classification specifically references the 2009 title rather than the campaign remaster. However, its “ORIGINAL” designation should not be interpreted as confirmation that the complete 2009 multiplayer experience is returning.
Australia’s classification database also contains an earlier entry for Modern Warfare 2 dated October 15, 2009. That record assigned the game an MA15+ rating for strong violence, making the new R18+ classification a separate entry with different consumer advice.
The October 2026 classification uses the IARC Global Rating Tool rather than the classification category shown in the original 2009 record. The newer entry does not explain why the game was submitted for classification again or whether its content differs from previously released versions.
For players hoping to revisit the original Modern Warfare 2 on newer consoles, the filing provides a reason to watch for further developments, but it does not confirm a PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S or Nintendo Switch 2 release.
Activision has not announced a new Modern Warfare 2 port, remaster or rerelease in connection with the Australian classification. Until further information emerges, the confirmed development remains the October 1 rating rather than a new game launch.
