Activision is changing how Double XP tokens work in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4. The company confirmed on September 28 that 2XP tokens will count down based on in-game time rather than continuously in real time, meaning time spent outside a match will no longer consume the active token.
The change was announced through the official Call of Duty account, which said players will have “more time to make your 2XP count” and confirmed that tokens will count down in game time. Activision also said existing tokens will be usable in Modern Warfare 4. The announcement follows years of player complaints about the current system, under which activating a token starts its timer immediately and continues consuming it while players are in menus, waiting in lobbies or otherwise outside an active match. Under the new system, the timer will instead pause when players are not participating in a match and resume when they return to gameplay. That makes the duration printed on a token more closely correspond to the amount of multiplayer time during which its XP bonus is actually active. The change applies to Modern Warfare 4, which is scheduled to launch on October 23, 2026. Esports.gg

The adjustment is particularly relevant because Activision is carrying existing 2XP tokens into the new game. The company has separately confirmed that promotional rewards can include Player XP and Weapon XP tokens, with some offers providing separate tokens for the different progression systems. Its current Modern Warfare 4 bonus-content information also states that promotional 2XP redemptions are subject to account limits, including a maximum amount of each token type that can be held across promotions and a daily usage limit. That means players who have accumulated tokens in Black Ops 7 or Warzone will have an opportunity to use them under the revised timer system when Modern Warfare 4 launches. Activision had already confirmed that unspent 2XP tokens would transfer into the new game, making the September 28 announcement a change to how those saved resources will function rather than a new reward or token category. The distinction matters because the previous real-time system could reduce the effective value of a token during unavoidable downtime. A one-hour token could continue running while a player was searching for a match, adjusting a loadout or sitting in a lobby, leaving less of the boost available for actual gameplay. The new approach removes that particular source of lost token time and lets players spend the token’s duration during matches instead. Esports.gg
The change arrives as Activision prepares Modern Warfare 4 for its October launch and continues to finalize progression details. The game is being positioned as the conclusion of the rebooted Modern Warfare storyline, while its progression systems include separate XP categories for player and weapon advancement. For players planning to start the new game with a stockpile of bonuses, the revised 2XP timer will be one of the more consequential changes to how those existing rewards can be used.
