Activision has confirmed that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4’s DMZ mode will enter early access on October 20, three days before the game’s full release on October 23. Players who digitally preorder or prepurchase either the Standard Digital Edition or Vault Edition will be able to access the entire extraction mode ahead of launch. The announcement was made on October 9 through an official Call of Duty blog post accompanying the latest DMZ gameplay details and promotional trailer.
The early-access offer covers Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, PlayStation 5, Battle.net, Steam, and Nintendo Switch 2. Activision has also confirmed that the campaign will become available earlier, on October 16, for eligible digital purchasers. This creates a staggered release schedule in which campaign players get a week of early access, DMZ becomes playable three days before launch, and the full game arrives on October 23. Exact starting times may vary by platform and region.
Unlike a limited preview or beta, the October 20 opening will provide access to all of DMZ. Activision describes the mode as an extraction shooter built around persistent progression, open-world exploration, and encounters with both AI-controlled enemies and rival players. The experience takes place in Hajin, a new environment connected to the events of Modern Warfare 4’s campaign, where players undertake missions, collect resources, and attempt to extract with their equipment and rewards.

The announcement follows a series of developer reveals focused on the mode’s setting and gameplay systems. Infinity Ward previously showcased Hajin's environments and world design as part of its DMZ reveal campaign, establishing the setting for the upcoming extraction experience. The latest announcement shifts attention from the environment itself to when players can enter it and how its progression systems will function.
A central feature is the Forward Operating Base, which acts as the player’s headquarters between deployments. Here, players can manage their equipment, access stored resources, prepare Operators, and upgrade facilities before returning to Hajin. The base also contains a 3D Printer used to craft equipment and upgrades from materials recovered during missions. Resources include Synthetics, Electronics, Chemicals, and Metals, alongside rarer crafting ingredients found throughout the map.
DMZ will support Story Missions, Dynamic Operations, and Free Roam deployments, giving players different ways to approach the extraction experience. Story Missions contain narrative objectives and progression requirements, while Dynamic Operations offer objectives that reward players with experience, currency, and potentially valuable supply drops. These systems form part of DMZ's broader progression system, which includes Operator development, Forward Operating Base upgrades, and rewards earned through successful deployments.
Operators will also retain progression across deployments, introducing consequences for unsuccessful extractions. Players begin with two Active Duty Operator slots and can unlock another through progression. Successful extractions improve an Operator’s Dog Tag rank and provide Trait Points that can be invested in Warfighter, Scout, and Survivalist abilities. Operators who fail to extract can become missing in action, requiring players to spend DMZ Cash to recover them or dismiss them entirely.
Recovered Operators retain their Traits but lose their equipment, making the decision to recover experienced characters potentially expensive. The recovery cost increases as more Traits are invested, encouraging players to consider the risks associated with each deployment. Meanwhile, shared storage and resources allow players to prepare different Operators for particular objectives without rebuilding their entire inventory after every mission.
The October 20 early-access date gives digital preorder customers an opportunity to explore these systems before the full multiplayer launch. Activision has not announced a separate standalone purchase option for DMZ early access, and the confirmed offer is tied to eligible digital editions of Modern Warfare 4. The publisher also cautions that actual access times and platform availability remain subject to change.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 launches on October 23, 2026, with its campaign, multiplayer, and DMZ mode. Eligible digital purchasers can begin the campaign on October 16 before entering DMZ on October 20.
