Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 reportedly attracted 32% fewer Xbox players during its launch week than Black Ops 7 did during its debut last year. The comparison comes from TrueAchievements’ latest Xbox engagement analysis, which also places Activision’s new shooter behind several major Xbox releases from 2026.
Modern Warfare 4 launched on October 23, 2026, without day-one Xbox Game Pass availability, unlike Black Ops 7. That distinction is important when comparing the two releases, as Game Pass subscribers could access last year’s game without purchasing it separately.
TrueAchievements published its findings on October 26, using gameplay data from more than 3.1 million active Xbox accounts. Its analysis estimates engagement rather than providing official player totals or sales figures from Activision.

The publication also acknowledges a significant limitation: Modern Warfare 4, Black Ops 7, and the free-to-play Warzone share the Call of Duty HQ launcher. As a result, Xbox engagement tracking combines activity across multiple games rather than isolating Modern Warfare 4’s audience.
TrueAchievements estimates that Modern Warfare 4 accounts for at least 47.92% of the combined Call of Duty player count, based on engagement increases surrounding its early access period and full launch. However, the publication cannot determine the new game’s exact individual player total.
Even under the most favorable comparison, which counts the entire Call of Duty HQ audience toward Modern Warfare 4, engagement remained below several prominent Xbox launches this year.
TrueAchievements estimates that the combined Call of Duty audience during Modern Warfare 4’s launch week was 17.3% smaller than Halo: Campaign Evolved’s debut audience, 23.9% smaller than Gears of War: E-Day’s, and 48.8% smaller than Forza Horizon 6’s.
All three competing titles launched through Xbox Game Pass, making direct comparisons difficult. The actual engagement gaps for Modern Warfare 4 alone would also be larger because the Call of Duty figures include players of older titles and Warzone.
Despite those differences, Modern Warfare 4 generated substantial Xbox activity. TrueAchievements estimates that even its most conservative player-count calculation places the shooter 84.8% ahead of EA Sports FC 27’s launch engagement, making it particularly notable among premium Xbox releases without Game Pass support.
In the Xbox popularity chart for the week ending October 25, Call of Duty climbed from fifth to third place. Minecraft and Fortnite occupied the top two positions, while Gears of War: E-Day ranked fourth.
The Xbox findings add another perspective to Modern Warfare 4's early Steam engagement, where shared launcher statistics similarly complicate comparisons with previous Call of Duty releases.
They also follow Activision's acknowledgment of Black Ops 7's disappointing performance, providing additional context for how the latest annual installment is performing across platforms.
However, the reported 32% Xbox engagement deficit does not establish an equivalent decline in sales. Black Ops 7 benefited from Game Pass distribution, and both launch-week estimates include activity from other Call of Duty titles.
Activision has not provided official Modern Warfare 4 Xbox player totals in the cited analysis. For now, the available data indicates a smaller tracked launch audience than Black Ops 7, while leaving the new game’s individual player count and commercial performance unresolved.
