Overwatch Reveals Doctrine, Sombra Rework and New Escort Map

Blizzard has unveiled a substantial slate of new Overwatch content at BlizzCon 2026, led by the reveal of Doctrine as the game’s next Support hero. The announcements also include a new Escort map called Watchpoint: Grímsvötn, major reworks for Sombra and Roadhog, the return of Dokiwatch, and confirmation that Overwatch Spotlight will return in February 2027. Much of the new content is tied to Season 5, which launches on October 6.

Doctrine is Hero 54 and is described by Blizzard as a vampire-inspired Support character allied with Doomfist. His kit revolves around manipulating lifeforce using a scepter, infusions and bat-like drones, although Blizzard has not yet published the full numerical breakdown of his abilities. Players do not have to wait until Season 5 to try him, as a limited-time Hero Trial is already active and will remain available through September 14.

The character will officially join the roster when Season 5 begins, with his arrival playing a role in the conclusion of the Reign of Talon storyline. Blizzard says the season will bring its first year-long connected narrative arc to an end after following Talon’s activities across multiple seasons throughout 2026. The company is already looking beyond that conclusion, however, with a teaser for Hero 55 intended to offer the first clue about where Overwatch’s story will head in 2027.

Doctrine’s introduction is also tied directly to Watchpoint: Grímsvötn, a new Escort map set at a remote prison inside an Icelandic volcano. Blizzard says the location is where Doomfist breaks Doctrine free, reconnecting the two characters and setting the final chapter of the current Talon storyline into motion. The map expands the game’s pool of Escort locations while serving as a narrative setting rather than simply arriving as an isolated multiplayer arena.

Two existing heroes are receiving substantial changes alongside the new content. Blizzard confirmed that Sombra and Roadhog will both receive major reworks in Season 5, with Sombra undergoing the more fundamental change by moving from the Damage role to Support. The studio has not yet detailed every ability adjustment involved in either rework, but Sombra’s role switch represents one of the largest changes made to an established Overwatch hero and will require her kit to function around supporting teammates rather than operating primarily as a disruptive Damage character.

The announcement follows Blizzard’s earlier confirmation that Sombra and Roadhog were among the heroes being considered for broader redesigns during 2026. Their Season 5 reworks now move those plans from the exploratory stage into a confirmed update. Blizzard has also confirmed the long-awaited continuation of Dokiwatch as part of its upcoming content, although further details about what form that return will take have not yet been provided.

Players are also receiving a BlizzCon reward that is considerably more substantial than a typical event cosmetic. Anyone who plays one game after the Opening Ceremony can earn a Mythic Voucher, which can be redeemed for one eligible complete Mythic bundle from Seasons 1 through 14. The selected bundle includes the base Mythic Skin and its standard customization levels, while players who already own the base level of every eligible Mythic Skin will instead receive 50 Mythic Prisms. The voucher can be earned and redeemed until October 5.

Blizzard is already setting expectations for the game’s next major presentation as well. Overwatch Spotlight will return in February 2027, where the development team plans to reveal a roadmap for the year ahead. Combined with the Hero 55 tease and the conclusion of the Reign of Talon storyline, the announcement suggests Season 5 will act as both the closing chapter of Overwatch’s 2026 plans and the transition into its next annual story and content cycle.
