Rain98, the psychological suspense visual novel from developer C#4R4CT3R, has been delayed from its previously planned 2026 release window to 2027. Director Shoon T confirmed the revised schedule in a development update on November 2, explaining that additional work is needed to develop the relationship between players and the game’s central character, Reina. The studio is also planning a substantial update to the game’s free Steam demo in early 2027.
The delay marks the second postponement for Rain98, which was originally scheduled for 2025 before moving to 2026. Shoon T apologized to players awaiting the full release and acknowledged that the development team had underestimated the work required to achieve its narrative goals.
A major factor behind the revised schedule is the game’s emphasis on building a meaningful relationship between the protagonist and Reina. The developers want players’ interactions and time spent with her to shape their connection to the story and its characters. Implementing those interactions consistently throughout the full experience has taken longer than anticipated.

Rain98 combines visual novel storytelling with interactive adventure sequences set in Tokyo in 1998. Players explore the city, make dialogue choices, complete minigames and spend time with Reina Amehara, a mysterious girl whose desire to end the world forms a central part of the narrative.
The game received a free public Steam demo on October 17, following its presentation at The MIX Fall Game Showcase 2026. The playable version contains more than three hours of content, covering the opening of the story through the first half of Chapter 2.
Since the demo’s release, C#4R4CT3R has been gathering feedback about its narrative, gameplay mechanics and elements that players believe require clarification or improvement. That feedback will help inform the next major demo update, currently targeted for early 2027.
The expanded demo will introduce additional story content. The developer previously confirmed plans to include the second half of Chapter 2 in a future update, extending the playable narrative beyond the current version.
The additional content will give PC players another opportunity to experience the game’s developing story while the team continues working toward the full release.
Rain98 joins several other narrative-driven PC games now targeting 2027, including the recently announced dark science-fiction visual novel PRIMA MATERIA. Unlike that newly announced project, Rain98 already has a playable Steam demo available.
C#4R4CT3R has not announced a specific release date within 2027. Shoon T indicated that the team intends to provide a firm date once its development schedule becomes more reliable.
Rain98 remains in development for PC via Steam, with the existing demo available to download for free.
