Silent Hill: Townfall is using its first-person perspective for more than presentation, with PlayStation detailing how the viewpoint directly affects combat, stealth, navigation and puzzle solving. In a new feature published ahead of the game’s September 24 launch, Sony outlined nine ways Townfall changes the traditional Silent Hill formula, including a handheld CRTV that can reveal nearby enemies, corner-peeking controls and dangerous close-range combat. The game is the first full-length Silent Hill entry built entirely around a first-person viewpoint.

Visibility is intentionally restricted. Townfall uses a 2.35:1 aspect ratio that creates a wide cinematic image while reducing the player’s vertical field of view, making threats approaching from outside Simon Ordell’s immediate vision harder to track. That limitation puts more emphasis on environmental awareness and sound, which also ties into the game’s 3D audio and DualSense implementation on PS5.

The CRTV serves as Townfall’s reinterpretation of Silent Hill’s familiar radio mechanic. Instead of simply producing static when monsters are nearby, the handheld television can be tuned to frequencies that display enemy positions, including creatures obscured by the fog or other scenery. Players can hold the CRTV in front of them while moving, while the DualSense controller provides a haptic pulse when a new enemy enters the area.

Stealth is designed to work alongside that information rather than making direct combat the default solution. Simon can crouch behind fences, parked cars and other cover, while holding R1 and moving the right analog stick allows players to lean around corners or peek over obstacles. If avoiding an enemy fails, breaking line of sight can still help, and Simon can hide inside cabinets, lockers and closets, although enemies that see him enter can pull him back out.

Combat is intentionally risky. Melee encounters put enemies directly in front of the player, with improvised objects used both for blocking and striking back, and PlayStation says players need to react quickly to incoming attacks. Earlier demonstrations also showed Simon falling after only a small number of hits, reinforcing the idea that evasion is often preferable to fighting rather than simply serving as an optional play style.

Firearms and throwable objects can also make use of motion controls on PS5. Players can enable gyro aiming and tilt the DualSense controller to make more precise adjustments while lining up attacks. Townfall therefore combines conventional first-person aiming with several systems intended to make encounters feel less predictable and more physically immediate.

The perspective also changes how ordinary exploration works. Opening a door, searching through drawers or reading a computer can leave Simon vulnerable because the player cannot see what is happening outside the current field of view. Even opening the map physically raises it in front of Simon, temporarily obscuring much of the surrounding environment instead of pausing the danger around him.

Puzzle solving follows the same philosophy. Players will need to closely inspect desks, drawers, notes and environmental diagrams for clues while creatures may still be moving nearby. That creates tension during activities that would normally be relatively safe, with the first-person view forcing players to choose between studying an object and monitoring their surroundings.

Townfall also uses the perspective to communicate Simon’s internal state. Rather than relying entirely on spoken dialogue, short pieces of his internal monologue can appear visually on the screen when he encounters disturbing scenes or reacts to events. The approach gives players direct access to his thoughts while keeping the camera locked to his viewpoint.

Silent Hill: Townfall launches September 24 for PlayStation 5 and PC. With its CRTV, restricted vision, stealth systems and vulnerable exploration, the first-person camera is being treated as a mechanical foundation rather than simply a different way of displaying the same Silent Hill structure.
