Strange Scaffold and Frosty Pop have announced Something is Wrong with the Library, a haunted book-sorting simulator coming to PC via Steam this fall. The game combines library organization with supernatural horror, placing players inside a fictional library where hundreds of books must be returned to their shelves while a darker story unfolds around them. An announcement teaser accompanied the reveal, although the developers have not announced a specific release date.
Something is Wrong with the Library takes place in the small mountain town of Sweet Elm, inside the Alex Dieter Public Library and Center for Reflection. The library was established as part of billionaire Alex Dieter’s effort to transform the town into a technology-focused community, but its polished public image conceals a violent history. According to the game’s official premise, Dieter murdered unhoused people and hid their bodies inside the library’s walls, leaving the building haunted by the people who died there.
Players take on the task of cleaning and organizing the library during a single tense night, working alongside former administrator Phillip Shed. Hundreds of books have been scattered throughout the building by supernatural forces, and players must restore order while uncovering the story behind the haunting. The game’s narrative focuses on the connection between the library’s history, the people involved and the consequences that remain inside the building.
The central organizing mechanics are built around real-world library systems rather than a simplified inventory interface. The library contains thousands of real book titles, with players sorting fallen and missing books according to the Dewey Decimal System, author and title. This gives the otherwise ordinary task of shelving books a structured gameplay purpose while the supernatural events introduce the game’s horror elements.
Strange Scaffold is also adding a Modular Chaos System that changes the books players need to shelve from one playthrough to another. The system is intended to make subsequent runs different by altering the specific books and organizational tasks presented during each session. Alongside the sorting mechanics, the game features a fully voiced story and a collection of eerie manifestations that can be unlocked throughout the library.
The announcement also teases a location called the Drowning Room, although the developers have not explained its role in the experience. That restrained approach leaves some of the game’s supernatural elements undisclosed while establishing the library itself as the central setting. The contrast between methodical book organization and the increasingly unsettling environment forms the foundation of the game’s unusual horror concept.
Strange Scaffold is known for games including I Am Your Beast, Clickolding and El Paso, Elsewhere. Studio head Xalavier Nelson Jr. said in the announcement that he previously worked as a librarian, informing the game’s focus on the atmosphere of being inside a library after dark. That background also connects the mundane organization mechanics with the setting’s more unsettling narrative premise.
Something is Wrong with the Library is currently planned for PC through Steam in fall 2026. Frosty Pop is serving as publisher alongside Strange Scaffold, which is developing and publishing the game. A specific launch date and pricing details have not yet been announced.
