Sony will skip CES 2027, ending a decades-long presence at the Las Vegas consumer electronics show. A Sony spokesperson confirmed that neither Sony nor its affiliates plan to exhibit at the January 2027 event, marking a major change in how the company approaches one of the technology industry’s biggest annual showcases. The decision was first reported by Nikkei and subsequently confirmed by Sony to Bloomberg. The Japan Times +1

Sony’s relationship with CES dates back to the event’s inaugural edition in 1967, when the company first showcased products there. The company went on to become one of the show’s most prominent exhibitors, regularly using CES to present televisions, cameras, audio products and other consumer technology. Sony’s withdrawal therefore represents more than a missed annual appearance, particularly after the company maintained a presence across decades. The Japan Times +1

The change follows a broader shift in Sony’s business toward entertainment, intellectual property and technology aimed at content creators. In its statement, the company said it continuously evaluates its approach to events and communications according to the needs and priorities of its different businesses. Sony’s games, music and film operations have become increasingly important parts of the group, reducing the role that a broad consumer-electronics exhibition plays in communicating its overall strategy. The decision also follows Sony’s reduced presence at CES 2026. Sony did not operate its own booth at this year’s show, although Sony Honda Mobility, its joint venture with Honda, exhibited the Afeela electric vehicle and included a PlayStation experience. Sony and Honda have since moved to reassess that venture, removing another potential reason for Sony to maintain a significant CES presence. The Japan Times +1

Sony has used CES for notable announcements in the past, including major demonstrations and product presentations tied to its consumer technology and PlayStation businesses. The company has also traditionally benefited from the visibility of one of the world’s largest technology events, where major hardware makers compete for attention ahead of the year’s product launches. With Sony absent in 2027, those announcements and demonstrations will instead have to appear through other events, dedicated showcases or the company’s own communications channels. VGC

The withdrawal does not mean Sony is abandoning consumer technology altogether. The company remains active across areas including image sensors, entertainment hardware and creator-focused technologies, while PlayStation continues to be a major part of its entertainment business. Instead, the move indicates that Sony no longer sees CES as the central venue for presenting that broader strategy. VGC +1

CES 2027 will therefore be the first edition in decades without Sony or its affiliated companies exhibiting, according to the company’s confirmation. The change gives Sony more flexibility over where and when it presents future products while leaving CES without one of its historically recognizable exhibitors. The Japan Times +1
