Spy Drops Gaiden now has a release date, with developer Dadako and publisher Rainy Frog confirming that the 2D stealth spinoff will launch on Steam in October. The game is scheduled for October 13 in Japan, which corresponds to October 12 in some regions depending on Steam’s release timing. Until now, both its official website and Steam listing had only described the release as “Coming Soon.”

The new date comes alongside additional details about the compact stealth adventure. Spy Drops Gaiden puts players in the role of special agent Ripley, who infiltrates heavily guarded facilities on an island off the coast of Japan while investigating a wider global threat. Rather than reproducing the low-poly 3D presentation of the original Spy Drops, the spinoff uses monochrome graphics inspired by classic handheld games.

The campaign is built around eight covert missions with different objectives. Players will rescue prisoners, gather classified information, operate drones and infiltrate secured areas while avoiding guards and surveillance cameras. Movement speed affects how much noise Ripley makes, and the game also allows players to crawl beneath vehicles and use environmental cover to remain unseen.

Stealth remains the preferred approach, although guards can be knocked unconscious when necessary. Once an enemy has been incapacitated, Ripley can use a device called the Dream Catcher to extract intelligence that may reveal useful information or access routes into otherwise restricted areas. Each mission is also graded, giving players an incentive to replay stages and improve their performance.

Rainy Frog says the game will include more than the eight main operations. Two bonus mini-games inspired by 1980s arcade design are included, while completing missions can unlock additional retro color palettes and a harder difficulty mode. The publisher is positioning those additions as part of the game’s replay value rather than separate downloadable content.

Spy Drops Gaiden is a side story connected to the events of Spy Drops, which launched for Nintendo Switch and PC in July 2025 before later arriving on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The original game uses procedurally generated 3D missions and deliberately evokes the visual style of early PlayStation-era stealth games. Gaiden instead strips the concept back to a fixed 2D format while retaining familiar ideas such as infiltration, gadgets and intelligence gathering.

The Steam page currently lists single-player support, achievements and full controller support, with modest PC requirements that include 8GB of RAM and integrated graphics such as Intel UHD 620 or AMD Radeon Vega 3. Storage requirements are also particularly small at around 200MB, reflecting the game’s intentionally retro presentation.

Rainy Frog has priced the Japanese Steam release at 600 yen. Regional pricing has not been detailed in the announcement, and Steam was still displaying the title as “Coming Soon” when the release-date information began circulating. The store page already offers a downloadable demo, allowing players to sample the Game Boy-inspired stealth mechanics before the full version arrives.

With the release now set for October, Spy Drops Gaiden will arrive a little over a year after the original game’s PC and Switch debut. Its smaller scale and eight-mission format make it a deliberately different take on the same universe, trading procedural 3D environments for handcrafted 2D infiltration stages and arcade-style replay challenges.
