Star Fox Adventures is joining Nintendo GameCube – Nintendo Classics on Nintendo Switch 2 today, giving the 2002 GameCube adventure its first official re-release on modern Nintendo hardware. Nintendo confirmed the addition during its September 9 Nintendo Direct, with the game becoming available through the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack service. The GameCube Classics app remains exclusive to Switch 2.

The release adds one of the more unusual entries in the Star Fox series to Nintendo’s growing GameCube library. Star Fox Adventures shifts away from the series’ traditional space-combat focus and instead follows Fox McCloud through a largely ground-based action-adventure built around exploration, combat and puzzle solving. Players travel across Dinosaur Planet after Fox is sent to investigate the world’s collapse and becomes involved in a larger conflict surrounding the planet’s inhabitants.

Rare developed the original game for Nintendo GameCube, with Nintendo publishing it in 2002. The project began life as Dinosaur Planet for Nintendo 64 before being reworked into a Star Fox title during development, making it one of the more distinctive releases in Rare’s Nintendo-era catalogue. It was also Rare’s final Nintendo-developed console game before Microsoft acquired the studio later that year.

The Switch 2 release arrives through Nintendo GameCube – Nintendo Classics rather than as a standalone remaster. The service gives Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack members access to a growing selection of GameCube titles, with the library currently exclusive to Nintendo’s newer console. Nintendo Classics has also continued expanding its older-system libraries, including recent NES additions such as Ninja Gaiden III, R.C. Pro-Am II and Ikari Warriors.

Nintendo’s GameCube Classics implementation includes several quality-of-life improvements compared with playing the original discs. Nintendo says supported games can benefit from clearer image quality and higher resolution than their original releases, while the app also allows players to create suspend points and access other system-level conveniences. Some titles support multiplayer features, although Star Fox Adventures itself is primarily a single-player experience.

Star Fox Adventures follows a substantial run of GameCube additions already available through the service. The current catalogue includes titles such as The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, F-Zero GX, Soulcalibur II, Luigi’s Mansion, Chibi-Robo!, Wario World, Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance, Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness and Super Mario Sunshine. Nintendo has repeatedly said more games will be added over time, and Star Fox Adventures continues that rollout with another first-party title from the system’s original library.

Its arrival is particularly notable because Nintendo has recently brought Star Fox back into the spotlight elsewhere on Switch 2. A separate new Star Fox game launched for the system in June 2026, presenting a cinematic reinterpretation of the Star Fox 64 storyline with new voice acting, an orchestral soundtrack and a full visual overhaul. Star Fox Adventures represents a very different side of the franchise, focusing on melee combat, exploration and character interactions rather than constant Arwing missions.

The GameCube version originally stood out for its technical presentation, with detailed character models and environments that pushed Nintendo’s hardware at the time. Its slower, adventure-focused structure also made it divisive among players expecting a more traditional Star Fox sequel, but it has remained one of the series’ most recognizable departures from its usual formula. The Switch 2 release now makes that chapter considerably easier to revisit without original hardware.

Star Fox Adventures is available through Nintendo GameCube – Nintendo Classics on Nintendo Switch 2 for members of Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack. As with the rest of the GameCube collection, it is not sold separately through the service, so access requires an active qualifying membership. The addition expands a library that Nintendo continues to build around some of the GameCube era’s most notable releases.
