SUNSOFT has announced SUNSOFT is Back! Retro Game Selection 2, a new four-game collection launching in Japan on December 17, 2026. The compilation is coming to Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5 and PC via Steam, bringing together four Famicom-era titles from SUNSOFT’s early home-console catalog. A western release date has not yet been confirmed.
Retro Game Selection 2 includes Ikki, Atlantis no Nazo, Super Arabian and Maharaja. Each game is being preserved in its original retro style while gaining modern convenience features including save functionality and rewind, making the older titles considerably easier to revisit without reproducing every limitation of the original hardware. A Gallery Mode will also contain historical material such as original illustrations, concept artwork and promotional flyers preserved by SUNSOFT.
Ikki is one of the most recognizable games in the collection. The action game follows farmer Gonbe as he rebels against a local magistrate after his village is subjected to excessive taxation, with players collecting coins and rice balls while avoiding enemies. The original game supports two players, and the new collection retains local multiplayer functionality where applicable.
Atlantis no Nazo, also known as The Mystery of Atlantis, is a particularly demanding action platformer built around 100 stages. Players control Wynn as he travels to the newly emerged island of Atlantis in search of his missing master, with numerous hidden routes and unusual stage connections forming a major part of the game. SUNSOFT says the new release will even allow access to a stage that could not normally be reached through conventional play in the original Famicom version.
Super Arabian represents an even earlier part of the company’s console history. Originally released in 1985, SUNSOFT describes it as its first home-console game, with players controlling Arabian on a mission to rescue a kidnapped princess. Progress involves defeating enemies and collecting Magic Jars, while eliminating groups of enemies can temporarily transform the protagonist into the invincible Super Arabian.
The fourth title, Maharaja, differs considerably from the other games by combining adventure and RPG elements. Released for Famicom in 1989, it follows a traveler in India who discovers a mysterious wooden box sought by a Maharaja and becomes caught up in a conflict affecting the fate of the world. SUNSOFT says this marks Maharaja’s first home-console port since its original Famicom release more than three decades ago.
All four games will also be sold individually as digital releases on Switch, PS5 and Steam. In Japan, SUNSOFT has priced the complete downloadable collection at 4,378 yen on consoles and 2,970 yen on Steam, while individual games will cost 1,540 yen on consoles and 1,320 yen on Steam. The physical standard edition is priced at 5,478 yen, with a limited Collector’s Box available for 10,890 yen.
That Collector’s Box includes additional memorabilia aimed at longtime SUNSOFT fans, including a physical recreation of Ikki’s bamboo spear and an Atlantis Island completion map. Retailer-specific bonuses are also planned in Japan, ranging from stickers and clear files to other promotional items. SUNSOFT has not announced equivalent physical editions or pricing for western markets.
Retro Game Selection 2 follows the first SUNSOFT is Back! Retro Game Selection, which collected The Wing of Madoola, Firework Thrower Kantaro’s 53 Stations of the Tokaido and Ripple Island. That compilation initially launched in Japan before receiving an English-language western release later in 2024, although SUNSOFT has not yet said whether the sequel will follow the same rollout.
The new collection continues the publisher’s broader effort to revive and preserve games from its 1980s catalog while adding features that reduce some of the difficulty and inconvenience associated with the originals. Rather than remaking the games, SUNSOFT is packaging their original designs with save states, rewind support and archival material.
SUNSOFT is Back! Retro Game Selection 2 launches December 17, 2026 in Japan for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5 and PC via Steam. Western availability remains unconfirmed.
