In a controversial design decision, Ubisoft has confirmed that the upcoming remake Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced will not allow players to equip the series’ signature hidden blade as a selectable weapon.
Creative Director Paul Fu revealed during a Reddit Ask Me Anything (AMA) session that protagonist Edward Kenway will rely primarily on dual swords for active combat, with the hidden blade relegated exclusively to contextual finishing moves.
The revelation has drawn sharp criticism from longtime fans, who fondly remember the original 2013 title for allowing dual hidden blades as a viable, stylish primary weapon. Fu explained the rationale behind the change:
“Dual swords are the main weapons Edward will use in battle. The Hidden Blade is not a selectable weapon, but a fatal, contextual (and BLOODY!) takedown that is available when you break the defense of your opponent.”

According to the developers, this shift makes the blade a “critical part of moment-to-moment combat, which was not the case in the original.
The change is part of a broader overhaul of the game’s mechanics. Black Flag Resynced, rebuilt from the ground up for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, features a more action-oriented combat system focused on parries, chained combos, and a new defense meter. The game is already topping charts ahead of its release.
While Ubisoft Singapore aims to modernize the thirteen-year-old classic, the removal of selectable hidden blades represents a major departure from the original’s freedom. In the 2013 version, players could switch to the hidden blades mid-fight, offering a faster, more aggressive playstyle distinct from swordplay.

The decision has been met with significant backlash in the community. One fan commented, “Having only 1 weapon will get old very fast, especially when the animation pool for the finishers is already quite low.” Others have expressed disappointment that an “otherwise excellent looking remake” now carries a “massive misstep” regarding combat variety.
Despite the outcry, Ubisoft appears committed to the new direction, emphasizing that the hidden blade takedowns are designed to be more rewarding and “bloody” when executed after depleting an enemy’s guard.
While Black Flag Resynced promises enhanced visuals, smoother parkour, and revamped stealth systems—including the return of social stealth—the hidden blade controversy highlights the challenge of balancing nostalgia with innovation.
As the July 9, 2026 release date approaches, Ubisoft faces pressure to address fan concerns, though no immediate changes to the weapon system have been indicated. Whether this design choice enhances the remake’s tactical depth or diminishes the power fantasy of being an Assassin will ultimately be decided by players when the game launches later this year.
