Valve says the ongoing memory and storage shortage has not changed its plans for a Steam Deck 2, despite the same supply crisis already affecting the company’s current hardware. The next-generation handheld remains in development, but Valve is still waiting for hardware capable of delivering the performance and efficiency jump it considers large enough to justify a true successor. The company has not announced a release window.
Valve programmer Pierre-Loup Griffais has repeatedly said that the company’s main obstacle to launching a new Steam Deck is not simply component pricing. Valve wants a much larger generational improvement than the incremental gains available from current handheld processors, while retaining the battery life and power characteristics that made the original Deck practical. The company has previously said that even a 20%, 30% or 50% performance increase at similar battery life would not necessarily be enough.
That position means the current DRAM and NAND shortage has not forced Valve to postpone a Steam Deck 2 that was otherwise ready for release. Instead, the company was already waiting for a suitable system-on-chip before the shortage became one of the biggest problems facing consumer hardware manufacturers. Valve has confirmed that it is actively working toward its next-generation handheld, but it has not committed to a specific processor, specification or launch year.
The shortage is still having a major effect elsewhere in Valve’s hardware business. Existing Steam Deck units have faced intermittent availability in some regions because of constrained memory and storage supplies, while Valve has also had to revisit pricing and production plans for newer devices. Steam Machine and Steam Frame were both affected by rising component costs during development, with memory and NAND becoming particularly difficult and expensive to secure.
Those pressures have become increasingly visible in Valve’s recent hardware launches. The company has acknowledged that memory pricing forced it to become more aggressive with margins while still keeping its hardware business financially self-sustaining rather than subsidizing devices through software sales. Steam Frame’s launch pricing also ended up substantially above what some buyers initially expected, with regional Steam Frame pricing surfacing through Steam shortly before Valve formally opened reservations.
Valve engineers have described the present supply environment as unusually severe. Memory and storage shortages have overshadowed constraints affecting other components such as PCB materials, plastics and capacitors, while retail pricing can lag changes in wholesale component costs by several months. That makes it difficult for hardware manufacturers to predict final costs far in advance, particularly for devices that depend on large amounts of RAM or flash storage.
For Steam Deck 2, however, Valve’s comments suggest that the shortage remains a secondary consideration rather than the deciding factor behind its timing. The company is still primarily focused on finding a processor capable of offering a substantial performance-per-watt improvement over the existing Steam Deck. More recent handheld chips have delivered higher peak performance, but Valve has argued that many operate closer to low-power laptop territory and do not yet provide the balance it wants for a dedicated portable gaming system.
The company has also indicated that lessons learned from Steam Machine, Steam Frame and its broader SteamOS work will feed into the eventual Deck successor. Steam Frame, for example, has expanded Valve’s work with ARM hardware and compatibility layers, while Steam Machine has required additional development around discrete GPUs, VRAM handling and broader PC configurations. Valve sees those projects as part of a continuous hardware platform rather than isolated products.
No final Steam Deck 2 specifications have been announced, and Valve has not confirmed whether the successor will continue using an x86 AMD APU or eventually move to another architecture. Previous comments have left ARM as a technical possibility without establishing it as the direction for the next handheld. Pricing is similarly impossible to predict while memory and storage markets remain volatile.
For now, Valve’s position is that Steam Deck 2 remains in development and its fundamental plan has not been derailed by the RAM crisis. The shortage is making current hardware more difficult and expensive to manufacture, but the company’s larger requirement for a meaningful generational performance leap was already keeping the successor further out. Until suitable silicon becomes available, Valve appears prepared to keep iterating on SteamOS and its existing hardware ecosystem rather than rush a modest Steam Deck upgrade.
