Ubisoft is reportedly preparing a Director’s Cut of Watch Dogs: Legion for release in the first half of 2027. Insider Gaming first reported the planned release window on October 5, while IGN has since said it has independently heard through its own sources that Ubisoft is trying to relaunch the 2020 open-world game. Ubisoft has not formally announced the project, so its release window and contents remain unofficial.

Insider Gaming describes the Director’s Cut as an attempt to give Legion another pass rather than a completely new Watch Dogs game. The outlet had previously reported that Ubisoft was working on an expanded version of Legion, but the latest report is the first to attach a first-half 2027 target to the project. IGN’s separate corroboration gives the claim substantially more weight, although neither outlet has published a detailed feature list.

Earlier reporting around the project mentioned possible additional content, including new motion-capture work and a potential nighttime-focused mode. Those details have not been reconfirmed in the latest reports, however, and should not be treated as final features. Pricing, supported platforms and whether existing owners would receive an upgrade path also remain unknown.

Watch Dogs: Legion originally launched in October 2020 and took the series to a near-future version of London. Its defining mechanic allowed players to recruit and control almost any character encountered in the open world rather than following a single fixed protagonist. Different recruits came with their own abilities, professions and drawbacks, while optional permadeath could permanently remove operatives after failed missions.

Ubisoft later expanded the game through post-launch content, including the Bloodline expansion featuring original Watch Dogs protagonist Aiden Pearce and Watch Dogs 2 character Wrench. The Assassin’s Creed crossover added Darcy, a playable operative connected to the Assassin Brotherhood, although Ubisoft treated that storyline as non-canonical. Despite those additions, Legion ultimately became the last major Watch Dogs release before the franchise entered a prolonged quiet period.

The new report arrives at an interesting moment for the series. Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot recently described Watch Dogs as important to the company’s future while acknowledging that it is not currently assigned to one of Ubisoft’s new Creative Houses. His comments suggested the publisher still sees value in the franchise even though a completely new installment does not appear to be imminent.

A Director’s Cut could therefore serve as a comparatively lower-risk way to bring Watch Dogs back into circulation without committing immediately to a full sequel. Ubisoft already has Legion’s London, systems and core content in place, allowing a revised edition to focus on presentation, technical improvements and potentially additional material. Whether the changes would be significant enough to bring back players who were dissatisfied with the original game remains the larger question.

The reported project also fits a broader industry pattern of publishers revisiting recent games through expanded or revised editions. Depending on what Ubisoft ultimately changes, the Director’s Cut could range from a modest enhanced re-release to a more substantial overhaul. At present, the available reporting does not provide enough detail to determine where it falls on that spectrum.

Watch Dogs itself has recently shown signs of renewed interest despite the lack of a new mainline game. Player activity around Watch Dogs 2 has increased on Steam, while Ubisoft leadership has continued to publicly acknowledge the franchise rather than treating it as retired. Those developments do not confirm future sequels, but they provide useful context for why the publisher might see value in bringing Legion back.

For now, the strongest confirmed information remains limited to reporting rather than an Ubisoft announcement. Insider Gaming says the Watch Dogs: Legion Director’s Cut is planned for the first half of 2027, and IGN says it has separately heard that Ubisoft is pushing ahead with the relaunch. Until Ubisoft formally reveals the project, its final name, platforms, improvements and exact release date should all be considered subject to change.
