Xbox Cloud Gaming Is Coming to Select TCL Smart TVs

Microsoft is bringing the Xbox app and Xbox Cloud Gaming to select TCL smart TVs in the coming months. Xbox and TCL announced the partnership on September 4, confirming that supported televisions will gain access through a future software update. The expansion will allow players to stream compatible Xbox games directly to a TCL TV without connecting an Xbox console.

Microsoft says the partnership could bring Xbox gaming to millions of TCL television owners across more than 25 countries. Specific compatible models, markets and an exact rollout date have not yet been announced, with TCL saying availability will expand in phases. The company plans to provide the final model and regional lists closer to release.

Once available, players will need a supported TCL smart TV, the Xbox app, a compatible controller and an internet connection. Cloud playtime must either be included with an eligible Xbox Game Pass subscription or purchased separately where Microsoft offers that option. Game Pass subscribers will be able to access supported titles from the service’s cloud-enabled catalog directly through the television.

The experience is designed to work without dedicated Xbox hardware. Instead, the television handles the Xbox app while the games themselves run remotely through Xbox Cloud Gaming and are streamed over the internet. Progress, achievements, friends and cloud saves can carry between supported TVs, Xbox consoles and PCs through the same Xbox account.

TCL says eligible models will receive the capability through a software update rather than requiring customers to purchase a separate streaming accessory. The manufacturer is also emphasizing display features such as high refresh rates, wide color gamut, motion processing and low-latency tuning on supported models, although the actual streaming experience will depend on the individual television, game, network connection and service settings.

The addition of TCL continues Microsoft’s strategy of putting the Xbox app on devices beyond its own consoles. Xbox Cloud Gaming is already supported on selected Samsung and LG smart TVs, Amazon Fire TV hardware and compatible VIDAA OS televisions, including certain Hisense models. The TCL partnership broadens that TV strategy to another major television manufacturer without changing the underlying cloud-based approach.

Microsoft has increasingly presented Xbox as an ecosystem that can extend across consoles, PCs, televisions and other devices rather than being tied to a single piece of hardware. Its TV integrations are particularly important to that approach because they reduce the equipment required to access console games: a compatible controller and supported television can be sufficient for cloud play. That makes partnerships with television manufacturers a direct way for Microsoft to broaden the potential audience for Xbox Cloud Gaming.

The expansion arrives shortly before Microsoft changes how cloud gaming is allocated through Game Pass. Beginning in November, Xbox Cloud Gaming will introduce monthly playtime limits for Game Pass tiers, with Ultimate receiving 15 hours per month, Premium receiving 10 hours and Essential receiving five hours. Additional cloud playtime will be available separately, meaning TCL owners joining after the rollout may encounter a different usage model from the unlimited access previously associated with eligible subscriptions.

Microsoft has not yet said whether every TCL television running the same smart TV platform will eventually qualify. TCL instead describes the feature as coming to eligible models in supported markets, suggesting hardware certification and regional service availability will determine which televisions receive the Xbox app. More precise compatibility information is expected before the phased rollout begins.

The companies have also not announced whether the Xbox app will appear simultaneously across all supported countries. TCL says it and Xbox will continue working together on device qualification and the on-TV experience while availability expands. That leaves the exact timing dependent on individual models and markets rather than one worldwide launch date.

Xbox Cloud Gaming is scheduled to arrive on select TCL smart TVs in the coming months through a future software update. Once enabled, supported televisions will be able to stream compatible Xbox games directly through the Xbox app using a controller and eligible cloud playtime, extending Microsoft’s console-free TV gaming strategy to another major display brand.
