Microsoft appears to be testing different promotional prices for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, with selected users seeing first-year offers that vary significantly by account. Reports from multiple users show prices including $16.09, $18 and $20 per month for the first 12 months, after which the subscription returns to the standard $22.99 monthly rate. Microsoft has not formally announced the program or confirmed that it is using dynamic pricing, so the current evidence is best described as account-specific promotional testing.

The clearest example comes from a Reddit user who was offered Game Pass Ultimate for $16.09 per month for 12 months. At that rate, the first year costs $193.08 compared with $275.88 if Ultimate were purchased at Microsoft’s current standard US price of $22.99 per month, a difference of $82.80. Other users in the same discussion reported receiving $18 and $20 monthly offers instead, indicating that the promotion is not being presented at a single fixed discount.

The offers also appear to target accounts without an active Game Pass Ultimate subscription. Some users reported seeing the discounted pricing on secondary or previously unsubscribed accounts while their active Game Pass accounts received no comparable offer. That pattern suggests Microsoft could be testing different incentives for new or returning subscribers, although there is not yet enough evidence to establish exactly how accounts are selected.

Calling the system “dynamic pricing” remains somewhat premature. Microsoft has not published documentation explaining whether prices are determined individually, assigned through an A/B test, segmented by customer history or simply distributed through several promotional groups. The important confirmed detail is narrower: different users are seeing different introductory prices for the same Game Pass Ultimate tier over the same 12-month promotional period.

Microsoft currently lists Game Pass Ultimate at $22.99 per month in the United States, following its April 2026 reduction from $29.99. The company’s official store states that subscriptions renew automatically unless cancelled, and the promotional offers circulating among users similarly indicate that the discounted rate lasts for 12 months before reverting to the regular monthly price. That makes these offers recurring monthly discounts rather than a single prepaid annual subscription.

The experiment is particularly notable because Xbox is already changing how Game Pass is priced and structured in other areas. Beginning in November, Ultimate will include 15 hours of cloud gaming per month, while Premium will include 10 and Essential five, with additional hours sold separately. Some existing subscribers in selected countries have also been told that their current unlimited cloud gaming access will be grandfathered, adding another layer of account- and market-specific differences across Game Pass.

Microsoft’s apparent willingness to show different subscription prices to different users also follows similar scrutiny elsewhere in the console market. Sony has faced attention over a reported PlayStation Store pricing test in which different users could see different prices for the same products. In both cases, the central question is not simply whether discounts exist, but whether the platform is experimenting with individualized or segmented pricing that is invisible to other customers.

For Game Pass, there is currently no indication that existing subscribers are being charged more than the publicly listed $22.99 Ultimate rate. The evidence points instead to selected inactive or prospective customers being offered lower introductory prices for one year. That distinction matters because targeted discounts are common across subscription services, whereas fully individualized pricing based on user behavior would represent a broader shift.

Microsoft has not said how widely the offers are available, which countries are included or what factors determine whether a customer sees $16.09, $18, $20 or no discount at all. Until the company provides more detail, the safest conclusion is that Xbox is testing multiple first-year Game Pass Ultimate promotional prices across selected accounts. For some users, that means the same subscription can cost substantially less for 12 months before automatically returning to the standard monthly rate.
