Tomb Raider: Catalyst Appears Delayed to 2028, but Amazon Stops Short of Formal Confirmation

Tomb Raider: Catalyst appears to have moved from 2027 to 2028 after Amazon Games general manager Jeffrey Gattis publicly placed the game in the later year. However, Amazon Games has since stopped short of formally announcing a delay, creating an unusual conflict between an executive’s comments and the publisher’s official response.

Speaking to The Game Business about Amazon Luna, Gattis discussed the company’s upcoming AAA projects and said Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis would arrive on February 12, 2027, before Amazon would “follow on in 2028 with the next one.” The next title in that sequence is Catalyst, which Amazon and Crystal Dynamics originally announced for 2027. His wording therefore points directly to a one-year postponement, even though no dedicated delay statement has been issued.

Amazon Games later told Gematsu that it had “nothing new to share” about Catalyst’s timing. The publisher added that development was progressing well and that more information would be released closer to launch. That response does not reaffirm the previously announced 2027 window, but it also avoids formally adopting 2028 as the new release year. For now, the strongest evidence of a delay comes from the person leading Amazon’s games business rather than from a conventional press release, trailer, or updated store page.

Catalyst was revealed at The Game Awards in December 2025 as Crystal Dynamics’ next original Tomb Raider adventure. Amazon described it as the largest game in the series to date, set across Northern India after a mythical cataclysm exposes ancient secrets and attracts competing treasure hunters. The project has been in development since 2022, uses Unreal Engine 5, and is planned for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC through Steam.

A 2028 release would also extend the wait for a completely new mainline Tomb Raider game. Shadow of the Tomb Raider launched on September 14, 2018, meaning Catalyst would arrive roughly a decade after Lara Croft’s last original console adventure. That gap raises expectations for Crystal Dynamics, especially because the studio has positioned Catalyst as a larger and more ambitious entry rather than another remake or remaster.

The apparent change also creates more space between Amazon’s two upcoming Tomb Raider releases. Legacy of Atlantis, a reimagining of Lara Croft’s 1996 debut, was initially scheduled for 2026 before receiving a February 12, 2027 release date. If Catalyst follows in 2028, Amazon and Crystal Dynamics would avoid launching both major Tomb Raider projects in the same calendar year.

That separation could give each game a clearer marketing campaign while allowing additional development time for Catalyst. It may also reduce the risk of the remake competing directly with the new game for attention, sales, and production resources. Still, Amazon has not explained why the schedule may have changed, so claims about development problems would be speculative.

The next meaningful update will need to come through an official Amazon Games or Crystal Dynamics announcement. Until then, Gattis’ comments make 2028 the most credible release expectation, but the publisher’s cautious follow-up means the delay has been strongly indicated rather than cleanly and formally confirmed.
