Ubisoft Montréal is assembling a small, autonomous development team for an unannounced multiplayer game built in Unreal Engine. Newly surfaced recruitment material indicates that the project will feature customizable characters supported by procedural animation and full-body inverse kinematics.
The clearest evidence comes from Ubisoft’s listing for a Technical Animation Director. The company says the successful applicant will join a “small, autonomous team developing an ambitious multiplayer experience in Unreal Engine.” Ubisoft has not announced the game publicly, identified its franchise or provided a release window.
The listings reveal a technically ambitious character system
Ubisoft’s role description goes considerably further than confirming that another multiplayer game exists. The Technical Animation Director will oversee scalable animation pipelines, MotionBuilder tools, motion-capture workflows and animation systems operating directly inside Unreal Engine.

The listing specifically references procedural animation, full-body inverse kinematics and character-customization features. It also asks for experience with live multiplayer games, suggesting that the animation technology must work reliably in a networked environment rather than only in scripted single-player sequences.
Full-body inverse kinematics, commonly shortened to full-body IK, allows a game to calculate the positioning of a character’s limbs and body in response to its surroundings. Instead of relying entirely on fixed animations, developers can use IK to make feet align with uneven terrain, hands connect naturally with objects or characters adapt their posture during movement.
Procedural animation can extend that flexibility by generating or modifying motion at runtime. For a multiplayer game with character customization, this matters because different body proportions, equipment combinations or cosmetic options can create animation problems that are difficult to solve through traditional hand-authored sequences alone.
Ubisoft’s emphasis on “scalable and high-performing” pipelines also suggests that the studio is planning for a significant range of characters or cosmetic configurations. That is an interpretation of the technical requirements, however, not confirmation of a specific progression or monetization system.

Why the small-team structure matters
The repeated description of the group as small and autonomous may be as significant as the underlying technology. Large Ubisoft productions typically involve hundreds of developers distributed across multiple studios. A smaller unit can prototype more rapidly, make decisions with fewer approval layers and establish a more distinct design identity.
That does not necessarily mean the finished game will remain small. A compact incubation team may later expand once the concept, tools and production pipeline have been validated.
The use of Unreal Engine is also notable because Ubisoft maintains several proprietary technologies, including Anvil and Snowdrop. However, the engine choice does not establish that the project is a new intellectual property. Ubisoft could still use Unreal for an existing franchise, an experimental multiplayer release or a collaboration whose identity has not been disclosed.

The disclosed systems point toward a game in which character movement and appearance are important parts of the experience. Players could receive more responsive physical interaction, fewer animation conflicts between cosmetic items and more natural movement across complex environments.
The technical challenge will be consistency. Procedural systems can produce impressive results, but multiplayer synchronization, performance constraints and unusual character combinations can expose visual errors. Ubisoft’s decision to recruit a senior technical leader specifically for these pipelines indicates that the studio recognizes those risks.
Ubisoft has not confirmed the project’s genre beyond multiplayer, nor has it connected the game to Assassin’s Creed, Far Cry, Rainbow Six or another known series. Any attempt to identify the title from these listings alone would be speculation.
For now, the defensible conclusion is narrower but still substantial: Ubisoft Montréal is developing an ambitious Unreal Engine multiplayer project through a small autonomous team, with character customization, procedural animation and full-body IK forming part of its technical foundation.
