Xbox’s Disc-to-Digital program has begun supporting Ubisoft games, reversing one of the most notable gaps in Microsoft’s new physical-to-digital entitlement system. Multiple Xbox Insiders are now reporting successful claims for Ubisoft titles that previously returned a “Digital license unavailable” message. Microsoft has not yet published an updated compatibility list or formally announced Ubisoft’s addition.

The change is particularly notable because Ubisoft games were still unavailable through Xbox Disc-to-Digital just days ago. Insider testing had shown titles including Assassin’s Creed Unity, Assassin’s Creed Syndicate, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, Far Cry 4 and Watch Dogs Legion failing with a message stating that the game was not participating in digital licensing. Square Enix titles were producing the same message at the time.

That situation has now changed for Ubisoft. Xbox users have reported successfully claiming digital entitlements for games including Immortals Fenyx Rising and The Division, while community tracking indicates roughly two dozen Ubisoft titles had already become compatible as the rollout began. Compatibility appears to be expanding at the catalog level rather than through a new console update, suggesting Microsoft and participating publishers can enable additional games on the backend.

Xbox’s system allows owners of supported physical Xbox One and Xbox Series X games to claim a digital entitlement by inserting the disc into a compatible console. The resulting license can provide digital benefits including Xbox Cloud Gaming and Xbox Play Anywhere where those features are supported by the game. Microsoft introduced the feature to Xbox Insiders on August 31 as part of a broader effort to preserve access to physical libraries as the Xbox ecosystem expands across consoles, PCs and handheld devices.

The physical disc does not simply become permanently converted into an independent digital copy. Microsoft’s system maintains a connection between the physical game and its digital entitlement, allowing ownership to move with the disc rather than creating a duplicate license that could be retained after selling the physical copy. The feature is currently still being tested through the Xbox Insider program rather than being available to every Xbox user.

Testing has already shown that the system extends beyond games currently sold digitally. Some delisted Xbox games can receive digital entitlements, including titles that can no longer be purchased through the Xbox Store. That has made publisher participation particularly important, because compatibility determines whether older physical collections can take advantage of Xbox’s newer digital features.

Ubisoft’s addition also demonstrates why the absence of a publisher during the preview period should not necessarily be treated as a permanent opt-out. Reports on September 8 described Ubisoft and Square Enix as not participating after users found their games unsupported, but neither publisher had publicly announced that it was rejecting the program. Ubisoft becoming available shortly afterward indicates that at least some of those gaps were temporary while Xbox’s testing rollout continued.

Other large publishers still appear to have inconsistent or absent support. Xbox Insider reports have identified Square Enix, Sega and Bandai Namco among companies whose games have frequently failed to provide digital licenses, although compatibility can vary by individual title. Microsoft has said that most Xbox One and Xbox Series X disc-based games support the feature, but it has not released a complete authoritative catalog covering every participating publisher and game.

Xbox specialist Klobrille, who highlighted the Ubisoft rollout, also says additional publisher support is expected over the coming weeks. That claim has not yet been detailed by Microsoft, and no specific publishers or dates were named, so further additions should remain unconfirmed until games begin appearing or Xbox issues an announcement. The ongoing Insider preview means eligibility can continue changing as Microsoft expands and adjusts the program.

For now, the significant development is that Ubisoft is no longer broadly absent from Xbox Disc-to-Digital. Games that were explicitly rejecting digital entitlement claims earlier in the preview are now working for multiple users, substantially expanding the usefulness of the feature for physical Ubisoft collections. Square Enix and several other publishers remain the next major compatibility gaps to watch as Microsoft continues testing the system.
