Ubisoft Games Join Xbox Disc-to-Digital Program

Ubisoft games have begun working with Xbox’s new Disc-to-Digital system, reversing one of the most notable omissions from the feature’s early testing period. Players are now reporting successful digital entitlement claims for titles including Assassin’s Creed, Far Cry and Trials games, only hours after reports highlighted Ubisoft’s apparent absence from the program. The change suggests the publisher was not permanently opting out and instead had simply not been enabled during the initial rollout.

Xbox’s Disc-to-Digital feature is currently being tested through the Xbox Insider program, where eligible physical Xbox One and Xbox Series X games can grant their owners a corresponding digital entitlement. Microsoft says players can insert a supported disc into an Xbox One or Xbox Series X console and claim access to digital features, including Xbox Cloud Gaming and Xbox Play Anywhere where those services are supported. The physical disc continues functioning normally rather than being permanently converted or disabled.

Ubisoft’s participation was initially unclear because players testing the feature repeatedly encountered a “Digital license unavailable” message across the publisher’s catalog. Reports covered titles including Far Cry 4, Assassin’s Creed Unity, Assassin’s Creed Syndicate and Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, with the console stating that those games were not participating in digital licensing. The situation led to reports that Ubisoft and Square Enix were missing from Xbox Disc-to-Digital, although neither company had announced a permanent decision to stay out of the program.

That changed on September 8 when Xbox Insider users began successfully converting Ubisoft discs. Windows Central reported that players had obtained digital entitlements for games including Trials Fusion, Assassin’s Creed: The Ezio Collection, Assassin’s Creed Syndicate, Far Cry Primal and Far Cry 4. An earlier Ubisoft community post documenting the unsupported games has also since been updated to say that the publisher’s titles are now working.

The timing is notable because the earlier reports about Ubisoft’s absence had appeared less than a day before support began showing up. It also highlights the provisional nature of the current test: Microsoft described Disc-to-Digital as an expanding program when it announced the feature in August, rather than providing a final list of participating publishers and games. The company said most Xbox One and Xbox Series X disc-based games would support the system, but individual titles can still be unavailable.

Support has already grown considerably during the testing period. Community tracking and testing have identified hundreds of compatible physical releases, including some games that are no longer sold digitally. The ability to obtain digital access from certain delisted Xbox games has made the system particularly significant for preservation and older physical libraries, although compatibility still varies by title.

Ubisoft joining the program also leaves the status of other major publishers under scrutiny. Square Enix titles were among those producing the same unsupported message during early testing, while Sega and Bandai Namco games have also been cited among gaps in the current catalog. Neither Microsoft nor those publishers has indicated that such absences should be considered permanent, and the Ubisoft change demonstrates that support can be activated while the preview is ongoing.

For now, the feature remains limited to eligible Xbox Insiders rather than the wider Xbox user base. That means Ubisoft’s newly working games should be viewed as part of an evolving test rather than a finalized compatibility list. Even so, the rapid addition of the publisher removes one of the most conspicuous holes in Xbox’s Disc-to-Digital program and provides further evidence that its supported library is continuing to expand.
