Bandai Namco has released a new story trailer for Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve while confirming that the series’ Annihilation Battle mission format will return in the upcoming game. The trailer provides a closer look at the conflict facing the Federation of Central Usea and its pilots, but the more substantial gameplay reveal comes from Mission 7, which will feature an Annihilation Battle built around destroying enemy forces and facilities within a time limit. Bandai Namco Aces producer Manabu Shimomoto says the mission type is intended to emphasize the player’s freedom to decide which enemies to attack and in what order.

The newly revealed mission sends players on a counterattack against Sotoan forces across an area containing targets such as a solar power plant, oil tanks, an air base and an ammunition depot. Pilots can choose their route through the battlefield while making use of supply lines to replenish weapons, including deciding when to cross the return line and rearm. Rather than following a tightly prescribed sequence of objectives, the mission is designed around destroying as much of the enemy force as possible while managing the available time and ammunition.

Ace Combat 8 also expands the format with more environmental destruction. Bandai Namco says explosions involving flammable objects such as oil tanks can trigger chain reactions capable of destroying nearby structures, while buildings near crashing enemy aircraft can also be damaged or destroyed. Shimomoto explained that these interactions were considered during development because they add another strategic factor to decisions about the order and timing of attacks.

The accompanying story trailer places those battles within Ace Combat 8’s wider campaign. It shows members of the crew aboard the aircraft carrier Endurance during quieter moments before shifting to combat involving the elite Sotoan Air Force Shadows Unit and Joker Flight, which is led by the player-controlled “Wings of Theve.” The campaign follows the Federation of Central Usea after much of the country has been occupied by the Republic of Sotoa, leaving the Endurance and its surviving forces attempting to reclaim their homeland.

Bandai Namco also detailed two major threats that players will encounter outside the newly shown Annihilation Battle. Megafloat Fatsia is a six-kilometer-long artificial island serving as a Sotoan arms factory and military supply facility, complete with a 2,000-meter runway, radar-linked defenses, missiles, railguns and UAV sensor coverage. Another weapon, the Tonitrus Spear, is an orbital kinetic system positioned around 500 kilometers above the planet that attacks using dense metal projectiles rather than conventional explosives.

The reveal adds another substantial piece to Ace Combat 8’s campaign shortly before launch. Details surrounding the game’s broader structure have already started emerging, including an achievement list that appears to reveal campaign progression and several potential story details. The latest official presentation gives a clearer indication of how some of those missions will actually play while avoiding the need to rely on leaked information.

Bandai Namco has also spent recent weeks outlining the game’s multiplayer component, which exists separately from campaign progression. Ace Combat 8 includes a 100-player Air Base hub alongside PvE, PvPvE and limited-time PvP activities, with cross-platform play supported across its online modes. Together with the return of Annihilation Battles, the game is shaping its single-player and multiplayer offerings around considerably different styles of aerial combat.

Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve launches October 2, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC via Steam. Deluxe Edition owners will receive early access ahead of the standard launch. With Annihilation Battle now officially confirmed, the latest trailer establishes that Ace Combat 8 will bring back one of the series’ more open-ended mission formats while adding destructible environments and additional tactical choices to the formula.
