Fortnite’s Kingdom Hearts crossover will bring the Kingdom Key into Battle Royale as a Mythic gameplay item with the v42.20 update. Fortnite leaker HYPEX highlighted the Kingdom Key Mythic on September 16 as content prepared for the update, adding another gameplay component to the crossover beyond its character skins and cosmetics. Epic Games had already confirmed earlier in Chapter 7 Season 4 that Sora’s signature Keyblade would become an in-game weapon later in the season.
The Kingdom Key was originally listed by Epic alongside other crossover gameplay items in its official Chapter 7 Season 4: Override announcement. That season introduced or promised items including Mega Man’s Mega Buster, Sonic the Hedgehog’s Power Sneakers and the Tetris Rift, while explicitly naming the Kingdom Key as content coming later. The v42.20 rollout now places the weapon alongside the wider Kingdom Hearts collaboration arriving on September 17.
Epic’s recent Kingdom Hearts trailer has also provided the first clear look at how the Keyblade can function during matches. The footage shows Sora wielding the Kingdom Key during combat, including a sequence where lightning strikes the battlefield after he raises the weapon. The scene closely resembles Thundaga from Kingdom Hearts, with the Kingdom Key appearing to cast Thundaga rather than functioning solely as a melee weapon.
The same footage appears to show additional close-range and movement-oriented uses for the Mythic. Sora can be seen performing a spinning Keyblade attack, while another sequence shows rapid forward movement with the weapon. Epic has not yet published the item’s complete in-game tooltip, so exact damage values, cooldowns, charges and acquisition method remain unclear ahead of the update.
That distinction is important because the Kingdom Key also exists within the crossover’s cosmetic lineup. Sora, Riku, Kairi and Roxas are all featured in the collaboration, with their respective Keyblades appearing as harvesting tools. The Kingdom Hearts trailer revealed all four characters ahead of their September 17 Item Shop release, while the Battle Royale Mythic gives the crossover a separate gameplay element.
Sora carries the Kingdom Key, while Riku, Kairi and Roxas are associated with recognizable Keyblade designs from the series. Fortnite’s version of the Kingdom Key also replaces the familiar Mickey Mouse-shaped emblem at the end of its chain with a Loot Llama charm, giving the weapon a Fortnite-specific visual change. That design is visible throughout Epic’s promotional material for the crossover.
The Mythic continues Fortnite’s approach during Override of turning recognizable gaming items into functional Battle Royale equipment. Mega Man’s Mega Buster was introduced as a usable arm cannon, while other collaborations have similarly crossed over into gameplay rather than remaining confined to Item Shop cosmetics. Kingdom Hearts is therefore receiving one of the more substantial integrations of the season, with characters, music-related content and a functional Keyblade all appearing around the same update.
The wider collaboration is scheduled around September 17, when Fortnite v42.20 is expected to go live following downtime. Sora , Riku, Kairi and Roxas are set to arrive as part of the September 17 crossover, alongside additional cosmetics associated with the four characters. Separate leaks have also pointed to Kingdom Hearts Jam Tracks and other crossover content arriving during the same release period.
Epic has not yet detailed where players will obtain the Kingdom Key Mythic during Battle Royale matches. It is therefore not known whether it will appear through normal loot, a specific character or encounter, a dedicated crossover location, or another season mechanic. Its final stats may also differ from anything inferred from trailer footage once v42.20 becomes playable.
What is confirmed is that the Kingdom Key is more than a cosmetic addition to Fortnite’s Kingdom Hearts collaboration. Epic announced it as an upcoming gameplay item at the beginning of Override, and the latest v42.20 material places its Battle Royale debut alongside the crossover’s September 17 rollout. Full details should become clear once the update goes live and the Mythic’s in-game statistics and abilities can be examined directly.
