A new Fortnite datamine points to Epic Games testing a Game Selection Screen that could change how players navigate between the game’s major experiences. Dataminer FireMonkey says a new placeholder background has been added specifically for a test involving the screen, although Epic has not announced the feature publicly. The discovery therefore confirms that related test material exists in the build, but not that the interface will ultimately ship to players.
The wording is notable because Fortnite previously had a dedicated mode-selection screen before Epic removed it in 2022. At the time, players on PlayStation, Xbox and PC could choose between Save the World, Battle Royale and Creative before reaching the main lobby. Epic removed that screen with update v19.30 and instead began loading players directly into the lobby, with Save the World and Creative moved into the Discover interface.
A new Game Selection Screen could therefore represent a partial reversal of that approach, although the datamine does not establish what the new interface would actually contain. Fortnite has expanded substantially since the old three-option menu disappeared, adding experiences such as LEGO Fortnite, Fortnite Festival and Rocket Racing alongside Battle Royale, Creative and a growing library of user-made islands. A modern selection screen could theoretically help organize those experiences before players enter the main lobby, but that remains speculation until more interface assets or code are uncovered.

The current Discover system has become one of Fortnite’s most important navigation layers. Epic uses it to surface official modes, creator-made islands, recently played experiences and seasonal content, while individual tiles can also change as updates roll out. Datamines have continued exposing front-end material tied to that ecosystem, including a recent Fortnite OG Season X Discovery banner that appeared ahead of the mode’s launch.
FireMonkey’s discovery appears different from a normal Discover tile because it is described as a placeholder background connected to a Game Selection Screen test. Placeholder assets commonly appear during internal development before final artwork and functionality are ready, meaning the current file may exist only to allow Epic to test layout behavior. It does not reveal the final design, menu options, supported platforms or whether the screen would appear at startup.
That distinction is important because Fortnite’s files regularly contain experimental and unreleased material. Some discoveries eventually become live features, while others are altered, delayed or removed entirely before players see them. Similar uncertainty applies to content-oriented datamines, such as recently discovered Fortnite NPC entries for Geralt, Knuckles and Shadow, which indicate development work without guaranteeing a specific release plan.
A redesigned entry point would make sense in the context of Fortnite’s transformation from a primarily Battle Royale-focused game into a broader platform. Players now move between multiple Epic-developed games and thousands of creator experiences under the same Fortnite application. Epic has increasingly presented Fortnite as an ecosystem rather than a single game, making navigation and content discovery a larger product-design challenge than when the original selector was removed.
The company has already changed Fortnite’s front-end several times over the years as the platform expanded. Discover has taken over many functions previously handled by dedicated mode menus, while the lobby itself has become a gateway to Battle Royale, Creative experiences and standalone Fortnite games. A separate Game Selection Screen could potentially create another layer above Discover, although there is currently no evidence showing exactly where Epic intends to place it.
No release date or rollout window has been found for the test, and Epic Games has not acknowledged the new placeholder publicly. The asset may be tied to an early experiment rather than an imminent interface update, so players should not assume the screen will arrive in the next patch.
For now, the datamine provides evidence that Epic is at least testing a Fortnite Game Selection Screen again, more than four years after removing the game’s old startup selector. Further assets or an official announcement will be needed to determine whether the test develops into a permanent navigation change.
