AMD and Nvidia may both push most of their next-generation gaming GPU lineups into 2028, according to a new claim from hardware leaker Kepler_L2. The reported exception is AMD’s AT2 chip, which is said to remain on track for 2027 while the rest of AMD’s RDNA 5 family and Nvidia’s RTX 60-series graphics cards arrive later. Neither AMD nor Nvidia has announced these schedules, so the timelines remain unconfirmed.
Kepler_L2 made the claim during a discussion on the AnandTech forums, stating that AT2 is the only GPU currently expected to launch next year and that everything else from AMD and Nvidia is planned for 2028. The comment directly contradicts recent rumors suggesting Nvidia could bring its Rubin-based gaming GPUs, generally expected to become the RTX 60 series, to market during the first half of 2027. When asked about those reports, Kepler_L2 said they were incorrect.
AMD’s AT2 is one of several rumored dies associated with its next-generation graphics architecture. Earlier leaks have described AT2 as a mid-to-upper-tier design with around 40 Compute Units, although other reports have cited different configurations as AMD’s plans have evolved. The chip is expected to sit below the much larger AT0 design and could potentially target performance around today’s high-end Blackwell products such as the GeForce RTX 5080.

The broader RDNA 5 lineup is reportedly more ambitious than AMD’s current Radeon generation. Previous leaks have described a flagship AT0 die with as many as 96 Compute Units, alongside smaller AT2, AT3 and AT4 variants covering different performance segments. None of those configurations has been publicly confirmed by AMD, and specifications remain fluid this far ahead of launch.
Kepler_L2 has also previously claimed that AMD is targeting clock speeds of roughly 3.1 GHz to 3.4 GHz for RDNA 5. Reports have tied the architecture to broader improvements in execution resources and graphics performance, while AMD and Sony’s Project Amethyst work has publicly demonstrated technologies such as Neural Arrays and Radiance Cores that could eventually influence future Radeon and console hardware. That does not confirm the leaked desktop specifications or release timetable.
Nvidia’s next generation is similarly surrounded by conflicting reports. The company’s gaming successor to Blackwell is widely expected to use technology derived from Rubin, but Nvidia has not announced an RTX 60-series product family or release window. Previous speculation pointed toward 2027, while the latest Kepler_L2 claim suggests gamers may instead be waiting until 2028 for new GeForce architecture.
A longer gap between major generations would also leave more room for refreshed current-generation cards, although even that possibility has become uncertain. Nvidia has been rumored for months to be preparing RTX 50 SUPER models with increased VRAM capacities, but other hardware leakers have recently suggested those products may be delayed or cancelled. Rising memory costs are frequently cited as one factor complicating those plans, particularly because higher-capacity GDDR7 configurations would make refreshed models more expensive to manufacture.
The memory market has become an increasingly important variable for PC hardware companies. Demand for HBM and other memory used in AI accelerators has tightened availability across other product categories, while DRAM and graphics-memory pricing has risen significantly. That has already affected hardware planning elsewhere in the industry and could make launching entirely new consumer GPU families at competitive prices more difficult.
If the latest claim proves accurate, AMD would have an unusual opportunity in 2027. AT2 could become the only major next-generation discrete gaming GPU introduced during the year, potentially competing against Nvidia’s existing Blackwell lineup while both companies prepare larger launches for 2028. Exactly where the chip would sit in AMD’s retail stack, what it would be called and how much performance it would offer remain unknown.
The rumored flagship AT0 would then follow in 2028 alongside Nvidia’s next GeForce generation. Kepler_L2 has previously positioned AT0 as AMD’s attempt to return to the top end of the discrete GPU market after RDNA 4 focused primarily on mainstream and upper-midrange products. That could put AMD and Nvidia’s most powerful next-generation cards into direct competition during the same release period.
For now, the only firm conclusion is that neither company has publicly committed to a next-generation gaming GPU launch in 2027. Kepler_L2’s latest comments point toward a much quieter year than earlier rumors suggested, with AMD’s AT2 as the sole exception before broader Radeon and GeForce launches in 2028. Until AMD or Nvidia provides an official roadmap, both the chip schedules and leaked specifications should be treated as provisional.
