Sony’s PS5 Power Saver feature was reportedly not created specifically as preparation for the company’s rumored next-generation PlayStation handheld, according to new comments from Digital Foundry.
The topic came up during Digital Foundry’s latest DF Direct Q&A, where Richard Leadbetter addressed speculation linking the PS5’s lower-power gaming mode with Sony’s unannounced portable hardware.
Leadbetter said Digital Foundry’s sources indicate the two efforts are doing different things and should not be treated as the same project. He characterized the PS5 feature primarily as an environmentally focused move rather than evidence that Sony is directly testing handheld performance profiles on existing consoles.
John Linneman added that the feature was originally conceived more like a reduced-power or media-oriented mode and was not architected specifically around the rumored handheld.
That does not mean the technology is completely irrelevant to future portable hardware. Linneman said the mode could potentially have some utility in that context, but indicated that supporting a handheld was not its original purpose.
The distinction matters because PS5 Power Saver has frequently been discussed as possible evidence for Sony’s next portable PlayStation system.
Sony introduced Power Saver for Games in 2025. When enabled in supported titles, the feature allows games to scale back performance so the PS5 can consume less electricity.
Sony officially tied the feature to its broader environmental targets, including the company’s goal of reaching net-zero greenhouse gas emissions across its value chain by 2040.
Power Saver requires individual game support. Sony initially identified titles including Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, Demon’s Souls and Ghost of Yōtei as games that would receive compatibility.
When the mode is active, some performance and gameplay features can be reduced or unavailable. Sony’s support documentation also states that PlayStation VR functionality cannot be used while Power Saver is enabled.
The existence of a deliberately constrained PS5 performance profile nevertheless attracted attention because Sony is widely reported to be developing another PlayStation handheld.
The speculation was straightforward: if developers were being asked to make PS5 games operate within a lower power budget, those same profiles could potentially help prepare software for portable hardware with tighter power and thermal limits.
Digital Foundry itself previously discussed that possibility when Power Saver first appeared, noting the similarities between the challenges of reducing console power consumption and running demanding PlayStation software on a battery-powered device.
The latest comments provide an important qualification to that theory.
According to Digital Foundry’s sources, PS5 Power Saver should not be viewed as a feature created specifically for the rumored handheld. Any technical overlap could instead be a useful side effect of Sony already encouraging developers to support lower-power configurations.
Sony has not officially announced the rumored handheld, so its specifications, release plans and relationship with the eventual PlayStation 6 generation remain unconfirmed.
Reports surrounding the device have suggested Sony is exploring hardware capable of running current and future PlayStation software in a portable form, but until the company formally unveils the system, those details remain unofficial.
Digital Foundry’s latest discussion therefore does not dispute the existence of Sony’s reported handheld project. Instead, it pushes back on one of the assumptions surrounding it: that PS5 Power Saver was deliberately introduced as a development stepping stone for the device.
For now, Sony’s official explanation remains much simpler. Power Saver exists to let supported PS5 games reduce performance and lower the console’s energy consumption.
Whether the work developers do to support that mode eventually proves useful on future PlayStation hardware is another question, but Digital Foundry’s sources suggest that was not the feature’s original purpose.
