Square Enix has released a new gameplay overview trailer for Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World, providing a closer look at monster scouting, training, synthesis and the new Joint Battle system ahead of its December launch. The footage also revisits the game’s story and exploration, with Dragon Quest V characters Bianca and Nera serving as its two protagonists. A free demo is already available across the game’s supported platforms.
The Withered World follows Bianca and Nera as they become Monster Wranglers and travel through the mysterious world of Witherwood. Both protagonists are searching for a way to cure their fathers, eventually working together while building parties of monsters capable of fighting on their behalf. Square Enix says no previous Dragon Quest Monsters experience is required to follow the story.
Much of the new trailer focuses on the familiar monster-raising loop at the center of the series. Players can encounter and scout creatures while exploring, train recruited monsters and build parties around their different traits, attributes and talents. The game will feature more than 500 new and returning monsters drawn from across the Dragon Quest series.

Synthesis remains another major part of progression. Two monsters can be combined to create a new creature, while certain special recipes require more complex combinations. The resulting monsters can inherit or develop talents that allow players to shape their party around particular strategies rather than simply relying on each creature’s default abilities.
The trailer also highlights Joint Battles, one of the new systems introduced in The Withered World. Square Enix describes the feature as a way for Bianca and Nera to combine their respective monster teams during larger encounters, expanding battles beyond the standard party format. The new footage shows multiple monsters participating at once as the two protagonists coordinate against stronger opponents.
Exploration is designed around discovering new areas and creatures throughout Witherwood. Monsters recruited by the player can accompany the protagonists directly through the environment, including larger creatures that would normally be difficult to accommodate in a traditional party-following system. Square Enix has emphasized the game’s stylized landscapes and the idea that new locations gradually reveal themselves as players move through the world.
Competitive and cooperative online features will also be available. Players can take their trained parties into battles against other Monster Wranglers, with modes ranging from more serious competition to casual matches. Cross-platform multiplayer is listed among the PC version’s features, allowing the monster-building systems to extend beyond the single-player adventure.
A free demo released earlier in September covers the game’s opening chapter and introduces exploration, combat and synthesis. Progress does not transfer wholesale into the full game, but players can carry up to eight monsters recruited in the demo into the final release. Those transferred monsters will begin at level one with their default talents when claimed from the in-game depot.
Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World was initially announced in May as part of Dragon Quest’s 40th anniversary celebrations. Square Enix later confirmed a worldwide December 3, 2026 launch for Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Windows, while Steam lists the game for December 3 as well. The standard edition is priced at $59.99 in the United States, with a Digital Deluxe Edition also available.
The Deluxe Edition includes additional downloadable content and 48-hour early access, allowing eligible players to begin on December 1. Pre-orders also include an Adventure Starter Set containing Monster Munchies, Bonus Balls and Seeds of Skill, while platform storefronts list additional digital purchase bonuses.
With launch approaching, the latest trailer serves as Square Enix’s most concentrated overview yet of how The Withered World combines traditional Dragon Quest Monsters systems with its new two-protagonist structure and Joint Battles. Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World launches December 3, 2026, with the free demo available now.
