Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 has received a positive early response from PC players, with 90% of its Steam user reviews recommending the game during its campaign early-access period. TechPowerUp reported on October 18 that the game had accumulated 1,812 reviews, including 1,630 positive ratings, following the early-access launch on October 16.
The figures mark a promising start for Activision’s latest first-person shooter. However, the current reviews reflect the opinions of players who purchased the game early to access its single-player campaign, rather than the broader audience expected to join at launch.
The trend was first highlighted by Insider Gaming on October 17, when Modern Warfare 4 had approximately 900 Steam reviews and a SteamDB rating of 81.15%. At that point, it was already the highest-rated Call of Duty release on Steam since 2015’s Black Ops III, according to the outlet’s comparison of recent entries.

SteamDB’s rating subsequently climbed to 85.78% in its recorded snapshot, while the positive share of individual reviews reached 90%. These figures measure different things: the percentage of positive reviews reflects the proportion of players leaving favorable feedback, whereas SteamDB’s rating uses a separate calculation. The distinction matters when comparing Modern Warfare 4 with older releases.
Recent Call of Duty games have struggled to achieve similarly favorable Steam ratings. SteamDB’s reported figures put Black Ops 7 at 38.71%, Black Ops 6 at 45.75%, Modern Warfare III at 48.19% and Modern Warfare II at 47.10%. Black Ops III remains a useful historical comparison, with a SteamDB rating of 84.36%.
The early response offers an encouraging indication of how players are receiving Modern Warfare 4’s campaign, but it does not establish how the full game will perform with a larger audience. Early-access players have specifically chosen to pay for access ahead of the general release, potentially making their opinions less representative of the overall player base.
Activision confirmed that campaign early access began on October 16 for eligible digital pre-orders. The full game is scheduled to launch on October 23, when multiplayer and the new DMZ extraction experience become available alongside the campaign. Players interested in the extraction mode can also check the details of Modern Warfare 4's DMZ early-access schedule, which begins on October 20 for eligible digital pre-orders.
Modern Warfare 4 also carries specific security requirements for PC players. Steam’s listing states that TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot are mandatory, meaning players should check their system settings before attempting to play.
The next significant test for the game’s reception will come when the full release brings in players who have not participated in campaign early access. Until then, the current Steam figures provide an encouraging but preliminary snapshot of the response to Modern Warfare 4.
