Sea of Thieves Season 21 begins on September 17, bringing a new seasonal reward track, recurring live events and further Custom Seas improvements alongside a free-play weekend across all supported platforms. Rare says the free period will run from September 17 at 15:00 UTC until September 21 at 17:00 UTC, with no Xbox Game Pass subscription required to take part in online play. The launch also overlaps with the game’s annual Talk Like a Pirate Day celebrations.

One of Season 21’s most notable additions is the Parley Pennant, a permanent new flag that lets nearby crews know a ship is open to conversation. Raising it does not force other players into any interaction, but Rare says it can be used to signal interest in forming an Alliance, tackling objectives together or simply socializing. Players who approach three other ships with the pennant raised before September 22 can unlock the Parley Proficiency Sails.

Season 21 itself is built around a calendar of recurring live activities rather than one large themed content drop. Rare previously outlined Fight Nights, Bilge Rats Weekenders and other returning events as part of the season, while Custom Seas will continue receiving additions and refinements. The refreshed free Season Pass also brings another set of rewards, with the Flame’s Light Lantern waiting at the end of the track and a new Star Prize available at level 50.

The Premium Tier introduces the Mutiny’s Mark cosmetic collection, while the Pirate Emporium is also receiving new and returning items. Rare has additionally confirmed that the Bleakheart Groom is returning to the Emporium as part of the September refresh. These additions accompany a wider schedule of limited-time rewards built around Talk Like a Pirate Day on September 19.

Xbox Game Pass subscribers can claim the Vociferous Speaking Trumpet as an in-game benefit between September 17 and October 31. Microsoft Rewards users will also be able to obtain Ancient Coin bundles that include the Loquacious Figurehead during the promotional period. A Golden Legends sweepstakes will run in several regions, with prizes including a special Xbox Series X and matching controller alongside Xbox Game Pass Premium subscriptions.

The sweepstakes is available in the US, Canada, Mexico, UK, France, Germany and the Netherlands. Eligible players can enter through methods including Microsoft Rewards points and downloads of Sea of Thieves-themed Bing backgrounds. Rare says additional controllers and subscription prizes will also be offered in individual territories.

The Pirate Emporium will hold a Talk Like a Pirate Day sale from September 18 through September 21, cutting prices on selected Captaincy items, bird pets and emotes by up to 30%. Twitch Drops will follow from September 18 through September 23, with rewards including gold, Seasonal Renown, the Drum Show-Off Emote, Lazybeard Title, Twilight Hunter Fishing Rod and Graveyard Gladiator Pistol. Watching participating Sea of Thieves streams for the full required period will also unlock the exclusive Fishbone Throwing Knives.

Season 21 arrives during a busy September for Xbox, with the company also preparing its Tokyo Game Show 2026 broadcast on September 17. Sea of Thieves will instead focus its own September calendar on bringing new and returning players together through the free weekend and its social-focused Talk Like a Pirate Day activities.

Rare also has another progression-focused event planned later in the month. Gold & Glory Weekend runs from September 25 through September 28 and will increase gold, reputation, Guild Reputation, Renown and Allegiance earnings. Together with the seasonal reset and recurring live events, it gives Season 21 several reasons for players to return throughout September rather than only on launch day.

Sea of Thieves Season 21 begins September 17 across Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, PC and other supported versions of the game. The free-play weekend runs through September 21, while several Talk Like a Pirate Day rewards and promotions remain available beyond that date.
