Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 has drawn more than 227,000 concurrent players to Steam’s shared Call of Duty application during its opening weekend, according to SteamDB. The figure remains below the 306,460 concurrent players recorded during Black Ops 6’s launch weekend in October 2024, although the comparison comes with important limitations.
On October 24, Call of Duty news account CharlieIntel highlighted an earlier Modern Warfare 4 peak of approximately 215,000 players against Black Ops 6’s roughly 306,000. SteamDB tracking subsequently showed the Call of Duty application reaching a 24-hour peak of 227,622 concurrent players, indicating that activity had continued climbing since the initial comparison circulated.
The newer figure is approximately 26% below Black Ops 6’s launch-weekend peak, a difference of 78,838 concurrent players. However, Modern Warfare 4 launched on October 23, 2026, meaning its first weekend was still underway when the comparison was made.

The most significant qualification concerns how Steam tracks Call of Duty players. Since 2022, Activision has distributed multiple franchise entries through a shared Call of Duty application rather than providing completely separate player counts for every release.
SteamDB identifies the tracked application as Call of Duty, with Steam App ID 1938090. It currently supports Modern Warfare 4, Black Ops 7 and Warzone, meaning its concurrent-player statistics combine activity across multiple experiences.
The same limitation affected Black Ops 6 when it launched on October 25, 2024. Its reported 306,460-player peak, reached on October 27, represented activity across the shared application, which also included Warzone and earlier Modern Warfare titles. Neither figure establishes exactly how many players were actively playing the newly released premium game.
Distribution differences further complicate the comparison. Black Ops 6 launched directly into Xbox Game Pass in 2024, allowing eligible subscribers to access the game without purchasing it separately. Those playing through Microsoft’s PC gaming ecosystem were not included in Steam’s concurrent-player totals.
Modern Warfare 4 follows a different release strategy. Activision confirmed on October 15 that the game would launch as a standalone purchase without Game Pass availability at release. The publisher stated that Modern Warfare 4 would not join the subscription service until the 2027 holiday period.
Consequently, the two launches cannot be compared as equivalent purchasing or subscription scenarios. Steam concurrency also excludes players accessing either title through Battle.net, the Xbox PC application or consoles.
Modern Warfare 4’s full release followed a staggered rollout that included DMZ early access beginning October 20 for eligible digital preorders. Campaign early access began on October 16, ahead of the October 23 launch of the complete game.
The release includes a single-player campaign, 20 multiplayer maps and the DMZ extraction mode. Before the full launch, the game’s early Steam user reviews reached 90% positive, reflecting reception during the campaign early-access period rather than the complete multiplayer launch.
The available Steam data establishes that Modern Warfare 4’s launch coincided with a substantial increase in activity across the Call of Duty application, but it does not establish a standalone player count for the game.
With the opening weekend still in progress, its eventual weekend peak could rise further. The current figures provide an early indication of Steam engagement, not a definitive comparison of total players, purchases or commercial performance between Modern Warfare 4 and Black Ops 6.
