AYAKASHI Fishing Folktails will launch in North America and Europe in mid-2027 for Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch, publisher Natsume announced on October 28, 2026. The Western release will feature English localization, bringing the Japanese fishing adventure to a wider audience following its original launch in Japan.
Natsume confirmed that it is partnering with Imagineer and Toybox to publish the game in Western markets. The announcement establishes a release window for both Nintendo platforms, although an exact launch date has not yet been revealed.
AYAKASHI Fishing Folktails combines freshwater fishing mechanics with supernatural creatures inspired by Japanese folklore. Players control a young man who embarks on a fishing adventure after experiencing a mysterious dream. Accompanied by supernatural companions known as Ayakashi, he must restore the colors of a world affected by a strange curse.

Breaking the curse requires catching powerful creatures called Cursed Lords, which inhabit various rivers and lakes. Players also help their Ayakashi companions resolve their problems as they progress through the story.
The game features more than 100 fish species, ranging from recognizable real-world fish to unusual monsters inspired by Japanese mythology. Eight fishing environments, including rivers, lakes, and ponds, provide different locations to explore.
Fishing involves more than simply casting a line. Players must investigate fish habitats, consult an in-game Fish Encyclopedia, and select suitable equipment and bait for their targets. Environmental conditions also influence fishing strategies, with certain catches requiring particular weather conditions or times of day, such as fishing at night or during rainfall.
Once a fish takes the bait, players use active rod-handling mechanics to control its movements and successfully land their catch. The game includes traditional fishing equipment such as floats and lures, alongside a specialized stream fishing rod that does not require conventional reeling.
Successful catches can earn Gold Medals, while information gathered from Ayakashi companions helps players develop strategies for catching more challenging fish. These mechanics combine traditional fishing simulation with the game’s folklore-driven adventure.
Natsume president and CEO Hiro Maekawa expressed enthusiasm about working with Imagineer and Toybox to introduce the title to Western audiences. He highlighted its combination of Japanese environments, fishing mechanics, and a story rooted in folklore.
The announcement adds another Japanese-developed title to the Nintendo Switch 2’s expanding 2027 lineup, alongside upcoming releases such as Slime Rancher 2, scheduled for January 2027.
AYAKASHI Fishing Folktails is currently scheduled for release in the Americas and Europe in mid-2027 on Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch. Natsume has not yet announced a specific release date or Western pricing.
