Blizzard Entertainment and Netflix are developing a new animated series set in the Diablo universe, the company confirmed during the BlizzCon 2026 Opening Ceremony. Blizzard president Johanna Faries announced the project as part of a broader push to expand the company’s franchises beyond games. No release window, cast, episode count or animation studio has been announced yet.
Blizzard’s official BlizzCon recap describes the project as a new animated series “set in the world of Diablo,” without specifying whether it will adapt one of the games or tell an original story within Sanctuary. The company said more details will be shared as the series develops, meaning the project’s setting and creative direction remain largely under wraps. There was also no trailer or footage shown alongside the announcement.
The Diablo series appears to be only the beginning of Blizzard’s wider transmedia ambitions. Faries said the company is already having discussions about similar projects involving Warcraft, Overwatch and other Blizzard properties, although none of those adaptations has been formally announced. She characterized Diablo as the first step rather than a standalone experiment, but the company stopped short of confirming which franchise might follow it or which studios and platforms could be involved.

That distinction leaves Diablo as the only newly confirmed Blizzard television project from the announcement. Overwatch and Warcraft should still be treated as possibilities under discussion rather than productions that have entered development. Both franchises have extensive lore and established cinematic storytelling, but Blizzard has not provided any timetable for when those discussions could result in additional film or television projects.
The announcement also comes during a particularly active period for Diablo itself. Blizzard used BlizzCon to officially reveal Diablo V for Spring 2029, with the next mainline game beginning after Sanctuary has already fallen and Diablo has defeated its heroes. The company also announced the Amazon as an upcoming Diablo IV class, confirmed Diablo IV for Nintendo Switch 2 and detailed additional content tied to the franchise’s 30th anniversary.
Expanding Diablo into animation gives Blizzard another way to develop Sanctuary without being limited by the structure of an action RPG. The series has accumulated decades of mythology around the Eternal Conflict, the Prime Evils, angels, demons and the human world between them, giving an adaptation considerable material to draw from. Blizzard has not said whether established characters such as Diablo, Lilith, Tyrael or Deckard Cain will feature in the Netflix series, so any connection to existing game storylines remains unknown.
The Netflix project also fits into a broader expansion of Blizzard’s major properties following a BlizzCon packed with long-term franchise announcements. Alongside Diablo V, Blizzard formally unveiled a new StarCraft open-world shooter targeting 2030, marking a major return for another of the company’s longest-running series. The television announcement suggests Blizzard is similarly looking beyond games when considering how its established worlds can continue to grow.
For now, the Diablo animated series remains at an early stage, with Blizzard confirming the partnership and format but little else. There is no announced premiere date and no confirmation of which period of Diablo history the show will explore. The more consequential part of the announcement may be Blizzard’s indication that Diablo is intended to open the door for further adaptations, with Overwatch and Warcraft already among the franchises being discussed.
