Discord Rebuilding Desktop App in Rust to Reduce RAM Usage

Discord is rebuilding its desktop application using Rust and the GPUI interface framework, replacing the Electron-based client currently used by millions of PC gamers. An early Windows build, identified as Discord Phoenix, has been demonstrated using approximately 290 MB of RAM, suggesting the redesign could substantially reduce the application’s memory requirements.

Discord co-founder and Chief Technology Officer Stanislav Vishnevskiy confirmed the transition in a November 4, 2026, post on X. The company also plans to remove React Native from its mobile applications while sharing more underlying code between desktop and mobile platforms. User testing is expected to begin soon, although no public release date has been announced.

The change addresses one of the longstanding criticisms of Discord’s Windows application: its relatively high memory consumption when running alongside games and other software.

Electron, the framework behind the existing desktop client, allows developers to create cross-platform applications using web technologies. However, its reliance on an embedded Chromium browser environment can introduce additional memory and processing overhead compared with native applications.

Discord’s replacement will use Rust for its application code and GPUI for its interface. GPUI is a GPU-accelerated user interface framework designed for native applications, allowing Discord to move away from Electron’s browser-based rendering architecture.

Vishnevskiy clarified that the new client uses GPUI rather than Tauri, another framework commonly associated with Rust desktop development.

The transition also builds on technology Discord already uses internally. According to Vishnevskiy, the company began adopting Rust in 2018 and has since incorporated it into its infrastructure, voice communication systems, and portions of the existing application.

The new development effort extends that approach across the client rather than introducing Rust as an entirely unfamiliar technology.

One of the most notable details is an early screenshot showing the experimental Discord Phoenix client consuming 290.2 MB of memory in Windows Task Manager. Vishnevskiy subsequently clarified that the application was running two accounts simultaneously.

For comparison, the existing Electron-based Discord client can consume considerably more memory depending on the number of active servers, channels, and features in use. Independent observations have shown memory consumption reaching 1 GB or higher, although usage varies substantially between systems and workloads.

The Phoenix screenshot is not a controlled benchmark, however. Discord has not published comprehensive performance measurements comparing the current application against the Rust replacement under identical conditions.

Consequently, the approximately 290 MB figure should not be interpreted as a guaranteed memory requirement for the finished application, particularly during extended voice calls, screen sharing, or other demanding activities.

For PC gamers, reducing Discord’s background memory consumption could leave more system RAM available for games and other applications. This may be especially useful on systems with limited memory or when running demanding titles alongside voice communication software.

The potential benefits fit into a broader discussion about Windows resource efficiency, including experiments demonstrating how dramatically Windows 11 memory requirements can be reduced under heavily modified configurations. Discord’s approach instead focuses on reducing application overhead without requiring modifications to the operating system.

The redesign is not limited to Windows. Discord also intends to eliminate React Native from its mobile applications while retaining native mobile interfaces and sharing application logic through Rust. Vishnevskiy has indicated that the new desktop experience is intended to look and function like the existing client.

Discord has not confirmed when Phoenix will become publicly available or whether the final release will achieve the memory consumption demonstrated in the early screenshot. The next milestone is broader user testing, which should provide a clearer indication of its performance during everyday gaming and communication.
