Developer Orca Studio and publisher UltraPlayers have released a free Steam demo for Bolt of Whalington, an upcoming Metroidvania featuring a Siamese cat, a mechanical companion, and puzzles that allow players to change the rules of the environment. The demo launched on November 5, 2026, offering an early look at the PC game ahead of its planned 2027 release.
Set inside Whalington, a mysterious floating whale-shaped city, the game follows Bolt, a curious cat mechanic exploring interconnected locations alongside his mech. Players must navigate obstacles, solve environmental puzzles, battle enemies, and unlock new abilities to reach previously inaccessible areas.
Unlike traditional Metroidvanias that primarily rely on unlocking movement abilities or combat upgrades, Bolt of Whalington introduces a system called Rule Terminals. These devices allow players to modify certain rules governing the game world, creating alternative ways to overcome obstacles.
For example, players can transform Bolt into a rat to access narrow passages and interact differently with creatures that would otherwise be hostile. Another mechanic allows health points to be converted into keys, giving players unconventional options when navigating locked areas.
Other interactions include dissolving walls with soap, using toilets as teleporters, and experimenting with environmental objects to reach new locations. The game is designed around discovering multiple possible approaches rather than requiring one predetermined solution to every puzzle.
Bolt and his mech also have distinct abilities. The cat can navigate confined spaces that the larger machine cannot enter, while the mech provides additional equipment, combat capabilities, and movement options. Players can separate the two characters and combine their abilities to solve environmental challenges.
Combat follows a similar emphasis on experimentation. Bosses feature different attack patterns, while conversations with characters, item descriptions, and documents can provide information about potential weaknesses. Exploration also rewards players with hidden equipment and upgrades that expand their available combat options.
The newly released demo includes four locations: Sardine, Kitchen, Cabins, and Residence. The Kitchen is fully accessible, while the remaining three areas offer limited exploration.
According to Orca Studio, completing the demo’s main content takes approximately 60 to 90 minutes. Players who spend additional time investigating optional locations and secrets can extend that to roughly 90 to 150 minutes.
The playable build also features four boss encounters, including one optional fight, alongside an additional challenge stage. Controller, keyboard and mouse support are included, and the developer has confirmed Steam Deck compatibility.
Orca Studio has incorporated changes following earlier playtests, including improvements to controller support, revised Kitchen puzzles, updated treasure locations, and a new boss encounter against the Security Chief in the Cabins area.
The team has cautioned that the final game’s map layout and story progression may differ from the demo.
Bolt of Whalington joins a growing selection of upcoming independent games offering playable previews before release. Other examples include Winds of Viridia, which also has a playable demo ahead of its planned 2027 launch.
Orca Studio currently plans to release the full version of Bolt of Whalington on PC through Steam in 2027. A specific release date has not been announced, and the free demo is available to download now.
