Final Fantasy VII Revelation will allow players to select Hard Mode from their first playthrough, removing the requirement to complete the main story before unlocking the higher difficulty. Director Naoki Hamaguchi confirmed the change during an interview with Hardcore Gamer at Tokyo Game Show 2026, revealing that Dynamic Mode will also return with adjustments to the game’s combat difficulty.

Unlike Final Fantasy VII Remake and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, which reserved Hard Mode for subsequent playthroughs, Revelation will make the option available immediately. Players looking for more demanding encounters will no longer need to finish the story before accessing the game’s highest difficulty setting.

Hamaguchi explained that Hard Mode has been redesigned to accommodate Revelation’s expanded gameplay systems. Rather than simply carrying over the restrictions introduced in the previous two games, Square Enix has reconsidered how challenging encounters should work alongside the new combat mechanics.

The change also reflects a different approach to post-game progression. Remake and Rebirth encouraged players to revisit their campaigns on Hard Mode after completing the story. Revelation instead emphasizes additional challenges that remain available after the main narrative concludes.

Dynamic Mode will return for players who prefer difficulty that adjusts alongside character progression. Hamaguchi described it as an option for strategic battles involving fully leveled characters and enemies, allowing players to continue facing challenging encounters as their party becomes stronger.

Another significant adjustment concerns item usage. Hard Mode in Remake and Rebirth prohibited the use of items during combat, forcing players to manage resources carefully through abilities, Materia and other mechanics. Revelation will move away from that traditional restriction.

According to Hamaguchi, the expanding range of combat options, including cooperative abilities and the new FITS system, means that simply disabling items would no longer provide the intended high-difficulty experience. The team has therefore reconsidered how difficulty should be balanced around the additional gameplay systems.

The FITS system introduces further flexibility to party composition while preserving each character’s established combat identity. Its role in Revelation’s combat was also demonstrated during the game’s Tokyo Game Show hands-on preview featuring Vincent and Cid.

These difficulty changes complement Revelation’s optional auto-level feature, which lets players raise their party to a recommended level at certain points if they have skipped side activities. Together, the systems provide different options for players who prioritize story progression and those seeking more challenging combat.

Hamaguchi has not detailed every mechanical difference between Revelation’s Hard and Dynamic modes, including the precise adjustments to enemy behavior, damage and resource management. However, the confirmation establishes that challenging combat will be accessible from the beginning without retaining all of the previous games’ item restrictions.

Final Fantasy VII Revelation is scheduled to launch on April 8, 2027, for PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S and PC, concluding Square Enix’s Final Fantasy VII remake trilogy.
