Square Enix has confirmed that Final Fantasy VII Revelation will launch for PlayStation 5 on April 8, 2027. The release date was announced during Sony’s September 3 State of Play alongside an extended gameplay presentation showing the Highwind, new traversal systems, expanded combat and additional activities. Revelation is the third and final entry in the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy following Final Fantasy VII Remake and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth.

Revelation substantially expands how players can explore its world. The Highwind airship can be freely piloted across the planet, allowing the party to fly between regions and parachute directly into destinations below. The new footage showed areas including Wutai, the Mideel archipelago and the Northern Continent, while Square Enix says the world has been designed around much greater freedom than Rebirth.

Chocobos remain part of exploration, with Piko returning as both a mount and a combat companion. Piko will become stronger alongside the party and gain additional abilities useful during traversal and battles. A new grappling gun adds another movement option, letting characters quickly reach rooftops and navigate urban environments without relying entirely on conventional paths.

Revelation also introduces instant character switching while exploring the world. Players can move directly between party members rather than keeping control centered on Cloud, extending the flexibility already present during combat. Certain quests can also be assigned to different characters, with Square Enix saying those choices can affect how specific story events and gameplay scenarios unfold.

Combat retains the action and Tactical Mode hybrid system established in the previous two games, but the new Function-Integrated Tactical Suitwear system adds another layer of customization. Known as FITS, the system provides four specialized configurations: Warrior, Knight, Black Mage and Summoner. Equipping one changes both a character’s appearance and available moves, effectively introducing job-inspired combat roles into the remake trilogy’s existing battle system.

The gameplay presentation showed Cid using the Knight FITS and Vincent equipped as a Summoner. Both characters are fully playable in Revelation after appearing as non-playable party members in Rebirth. Vincent focuses on gunplay and transformations, while Cid uses his lance for both focused attacks and wider area-of-effect damage.

Queen’s Blood is also returning with a significantly expanded storyline. The card game now includes a dedicated campaign centered on Red XIII, with new opponents and mechanics designed to disrupt familiar strategies. Square Enix says some opponents can dramatically change how matches play, giving experienced players new scenarios rather than simply repeating Rebirth’s card battles.

The expanded world builds on the large environments introduced in Rebirth, whose scale has also created technical challenges as Square Enix brings Final Fantasy VII Rebirth to Nintendo Switch 2. Revelation goes further by connecting its regions through free Highwind travel and allowing players to move from the air to the ground without breaking exploration into isolated zones.

Preorders for Final Fantasy VII Revelation are already live on the PlayStation Store. All preorder editions include the Mecha-Chocobo & Moogle Summon Materia. Square Enix is also offering a Premium Edition containing the base game, a Story Expansion Pass with two future story-focused DLC releases, 24-hour early access, the Reclaimant Choker accessory and consumable items.

A Premium Plus Edition adds further digital bonuses, including an art book, mini soundtrack, Polydroid Alexander Summon Materia, Nymphwing Bracelet armor and the Risk Taker’s Choker accessory. Square Enix has not yet detailed the stories covered by the two planned DLC releases, saying more information will come later.

The announcement was one of the biggest reveals from the September 3 State of Play broadcasts, turning Revelation’s previous 2027 window into a firm launch date. Final Fantasy VII Revelation arrives on PS5 on April 8, 2027, closing the remake trilogy with a freely explorable planet, expanded party control and several new combat and traversal systems.
